Swords are one of the main melee weapon groups in Conan Exiles, the blades you swing at enemies up close. Many of them carry perks, which are extra effects that trigger when a hit lands, such as Bleed, Cripple and Execution. The game sorts swords into short swords, one-handed swords, katanas and two-handed swords. Each type handles a little differently, so the right pick depends on how you like to fight.

How Swords Work in Conan Exiles
Every sword has light attacks and heavy attacks. Light attacks come out quickly and can be strung together into combos, while heavy attacks are slower and generally hit harder. Each attack uses stamina, the energy bar that drains as you fight and refills when you pause. When it runs dry, you can't swing until it recovers, so pacing your attacks matters as much as how hard each one hits.
Each sword's damage scales with either Strength or Agility, depending on the blade. Raising the matching stat is one of the simplest ways to make a sword hit harder, so check which one a sword uses before you build a character around it.
Sword Perks: Bleed, Gouging, Cripple and Execution
Perks are extra effects a sword applies when it hits, and they often shape a fight as much as the raw damage does. Bleed causes damage over time, and repeated hits stack, so the damage builds up. It also ignores armor, which makes it useful against heavily armored enemies. Gouging works in a similar way: it deals a small amount of damage every second for a long time, stacks, ignores armor too, and combines with Bleed.
Cripple slows a target, and repeated hits make the slow stronger. That helps keep a dangerous enemy from closing in or getting away. Execution is the finisher. Once an enemy is badly hurt, it almost always kills them in a single hit, so it's most useful at the end of a fight rather than the start.
Short Swords
Short swords are built for close, quick fights. They come with a lunge and a backstep, which help you close a gap or slip away. They work best against one enemy at a time, so they suit picking off a single target rather than holding back a crowd.
One-Handed Swords
One-handed swords leave your off hand free, so you can hold a shield or a throwing axe. That freedom comes with a trade-off, since one-handed swords generally hit for less than two-handed ones. They suit players who want to keep a shield up while still fighting with a blade.
Katanas
Katanas are two-handed, so a shield doesn't fit alongside one. They have their own moveset, so they feel different to swing than other swords. Bleed shows up often in this group, which makes katanas a good match for players who want steady damage over time.
Two-Handed Swords
Two-handed swords take both hands, so there's no room for a shield. They generally hit harder than one-handed swords, but they swing more slowly, and their longer blades reach further. Cripple shows up often in this group, so these swords suit players who want to control the pace of a fight.
How to Get Swords
Many swords are crafted at a Blacksmith's Bench, the station for making metal weapons. Recipes call for metal bars such as iron, steel or obsidian, plus a weapon handle or branches, depending on the blade. Star Metal is a high-tier material, but it's hard to gather because it comes from meteorites.
Legendary swords work differently. Most come from bosses and special loot, and they're rare, so getting one usually takes repeated attempts.
The Best Swords to Aim For
The best sword is usually the one whose perk fits your fight. Sword of Champions is a short sword with Bleed, so it suits players who want steady damage over time. Jagged Edge, a katana, pairs Bleed with Gouging for the same approach. Alligator Bite, a short sword with Gouging, takes that same steady approach, and its off hand stays free for a shield.
For control, Render is a short sword with Cripple, which helps keep a fast enemy at a distance. The two-handed Mastodon Killer and The Papyrus Blade also carry Cripple, and The Papyrus Blade adds Paper Cut, a light damage-over-time effect that doesn't stack. Musashi's Black Blade, a katana, combines Cripple with Bleed.
For finishing fights, Annihilator is a two-handed sword with Cripple and Execution, so it can slow an enemy and then finish them off. Curved Slayer, a katana, pairs Bleed with Execution for a similar finishing style. Pick the sword whose perks match the fights you run into most, since the effects matter more than the name.
FAQ
Can you dual wield swords in Conan Exiles?
Not in the usual way. Only a few pairings exist, and they depend on specific weapons rather than on any two swords you pick.
Where do legendary swords drop?
Alligator Bite, a short sword with Gouging, is one example. It drops from Risen Bones and ruin bosses on the Isle of Siptah, and it may take more than one kill to get.
Does Bleed work on every enemy?
No. Bleed is blood loss, so it doesn't work on undead or on creatures without blood.
Does Cripple stop an enemy in place?
No. The slow has a cap, and even a heavily slowed enemy can still move, so think of Cripple as a way to keep a threat at a distance rather than pin it down.
