What Bows Do in Conan Exiles
A bow needs arrows to fire. The bow sets the base damage of each shot, and the arrow adds its own effect on top, so the two work as a pair. Upgrading or choosing either one changes what every shot does.
The main advantage of a bow is range. You can start a fight from a distance, then keep your distance or close in once you see how the enemy responds. Effects such as poison keep working while enemies come toward you, so one hit can keep doing damage. Keep a melee weapon ready for when enemies reach you.
Agility Bows and Strength Bows
Bows in Conan Exiles fall into two groups, and the group decides which attribute drives their damage. Agility bows scale with Agility, which boosts ranged and agile weapon damage and adds to your mobility. Bows with the Power Draw tag, a label that marks them as Strength bows, scale with Strength instead. Derketo's Voice is one example.
Your build should follow the group. Points you put into the other attribute won't help that bow, so check which group a bow belongs to before you spend points.
Arrows and What They Do
Arrows decide what a shot does beyond its base damage, so the arrow you load is a real choice. Three types change a fight in clear ways, and each suits a different goal.
Blunted arrows are meant to knock an enemy out rather than kill it, which helps when you want to take a living thrall.
Poison arrows apply poison that slowly drains an enemy's health, so the damage keeps coming after the hit. That makes them useful in a fight where you can keep your distance while the poison works.
Explosive arrows burst on impact and hit the area around the target, so use them with care when allies are close.
Armor penetration is the share of a hit that gets past an enemy's armor. It matters most against heavily armored enemies. Bows differ in how much they have, so it's worth checking before you plan a fight against armored foes.
How to Get Bows
Some bows are crafted at a Carpenter's Bench. The Dragonbone Bow uses a Dragonhorn, Dragonbone and sturdy string, so you can make it once you gather those materials. The Star Metal Bow is made at an Improved Carpenter's Bench, but it needs a star metal bar first.
Legendary bows come from chests and bosses. Chests can hold bows such as Bessie's Bow and Eye of the Khan, though what you get is random. Derketo's Voice can be looted from the Servant of the Priest King at Warmaker's Sanctuary, and Reach of the Red Mother from The Red Mother in the Unnamed City of the Exiled Lands.
Boss loot isn't guaranteed, so you may need more than one run. The Khitan Head Hunter Bow, a legendary Strength bow, is sold by Khitan Bounty Hunter merchants for Ancient Obolus.
Which Bows to Look For
Reach of the Red Mother is an Agility bow, so it suits an archer who builds around Agility. Derketo's Voice is a Strength bow with the Power Draw tag, so it suits a character built around Strength. Its description calls it very accurate, though its arrows travel more slowly and penetrate less armor.
Bessie's Bow and Eye of the Khan are also Power Draw bows, so they fit the same Strength build as Derketo's Voice.
Building Your Character Around Bows
If bows are your main weapon, choose Agility or Strength as your main combat stat and build toward it. Perks unlock as you raise each attribute, so focusing on one stat helps you reach the perks that matter for your bow sooner.
Stamina and armor come from Grit rather than Agility, so an archer still needs some points in Grit.
