Every Story Mode horse is built on four bars: Health, Stamina, Speed and Acceleration. The right horse depends on the job, and the fastest one isn't always the toughest. Stables sell some horses once you reach a chapter. You tame others in the wild, and a few come from missions or editions.
How to use this collection
Each horse has four bars out of 10: Health, Stamina, Speed and Acceleration. Class is the breed's role: Riding, Draft, Work, Race, War, Superior or Multi-Class. Handling is a separate label: Standard, Race, Heavy or Elite. Available from is the earliest chapter the horse can be had. If that's blank, follow the location and acquisition notes instead.

Best horse by goal
There's no single best horse in Story Mode. Pick by the job.
- Fastest: Brindle Thoroughbred hits Speed 7 for $450 at Strawberry Stable after Chapter 3. It's the earliest paid horse with that bar. Reverse Dapple Roan has the same bars and price, but it waits until Chapter 4 at Saint Denis Stable.
- Budget speed: Palomino Dapple American Standardbred costs $150 at Valentine Stable after Chapter 2, $300 less than Brindle. You give up 2 Speed and 1 Acceleration (5 and 4 instead of 7 and 5), but both have 3 Health and 3 Stamina.
- Fastest with more Health and Stamina: Amber Champagne and Silver Dapple Pinto, both Missouri Fox Trotters, reach Speed 7 with 5 Health and 6 Stamina. Both cost $950. Amber Champagne opens first, at Scarlett Meadows Stable after Chapter 4. Silver Dapple Pinto waits for Blackwater Stable after Epilogue Part 1.
- Toughest: Rose Grey Bay Arabian has 7 Health and 7 Stamina, and it's the only horse with 7 Stamina. It costs $1,250 at Blackwater Stable after Epilogue Part 1.
- Tough, and earlier: Turkoman Gold has 7 Health and 6 Speed for $950 at Saint Denis Stable after Chapter 4. Turkoman Dark Bay and Silver match those bars but wait for Epilogue Part 1.
- Balanced: Black Arabian is 6 on every bar for $1,050 at Saint Denis Stable after Chapter 4. Only it and Rose Grey Bay reach 6 or better on all four.
- Free: White Arabian is wild from Chapter 2 near Lake Isabella, with 6 Speed and 6 Acceleration. Perlino Andalusian is the only free wild horse with 7 Health, but its Speed is 3.
Best horse for each class
A horse's class describes its breed's role. Here are the best picks you can get without a story reward. Bars run Health / Stamina / Speed / Acceleration.
| Class | Best pick | Bars | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Race | Brindle Thoroughbred | 3 / 3 / 7 / 5 | $450 at Strawberry Stable after Chapter 3 |
| War | Perlino Andalusian | 7 / 5 / 3 / 3 | Free in the wild near Brandywine Drop or Roanoke Valley |
| Superior | Rose Grey Bay Arabian | 7 / 7 / 6 / 6 | $1,250 at Blackwater Stable after Epilogue Part 1 |
| Work | Chocolate Roan Dutch Warmblood | 5 / 6 / 4 / 3 | $450 at Valentine Stable after Chapter 2 |
| Riding | Flaxen Roan Tennessee Walker | 4 / 5 / 3 / 3 | $150 at Tumbleweed Stable after Epilogue Part 1 |
| Draft | Shire Dark Bay | 4 / 3 / 3 / 2 | Taken from a wagon or coach |
| Multi-Class | Turkoman Gold | 7 / 5 / 6 / 5 | $950 at Saint Denis Stable after Chapter 4 |
Early, mid and late-game picks
- Early, Chapters 2 and 3: Dark Bay Andalusian and Palomino Dapple American Standardbred cost $150 each. Chocolate Roan costs $450 at Valentine Stable after Chapter 2 and has 6 Stamina. Brindle is the Chapter 3 speed buy.
- Mid, Chapter 4: Reverse Dapple Roan ($450), Amber Champagne ($950), Turkoman Gold ($950) and Black Arabian ($1,050) all open in Chapter 4.
- Late, Chapter 6 and the Epilogue: Rose Grey Andalusian ($440), Strawberry Roan Ardennes ($450) and Leopard Appaloosa ($430) open at Van Horn Stable in Chapter 6. After Epilogue Part 1, Blackwater Stable adds Rose Grey Bay, Silver Dapple Pinto and Turkoman Dark Bay, and Tumbleweed Stable adds Turkoman Silver. Tiger Striped Bay is a wild Mustang that shows up in the Epilogue.
Free and wild horses worth taming
No purchase needed for these. They're the wild coats worth the trip.
- White Arabian (5 / 5 / 6 / 6) from Chapter 2 near Lake Isabella. It's the only free wild horse with 6 Acceleration.
- Warped Brindle Arabian (3 / 5 / 6 / 4) at Wapiti Indian Reservation. Speed 6, but Health is only 3.
- Perlino Andalusian (7 / 5 / 3 / 3) near Brandywine Drop and Roanoke Valley. The toughest free horse, and slow.
- Tiger Striped Bay (5 / 5 / 4 / 3) west of Rio Del Lobo Rock in the Epilogue. The strongest wild Mustang.
- Red Chestnut Arabian (3 / 4 / 5 / 4) west of Lake Owanjila. Speed 5, and it has no chapter gate.
Edition and pre-order horses
Some horses come from a purchase bonus, not a stable.
- Dappled Black Thoroughbred has the same bars as Brindle, and it's free at Valentine Stable after Chapter 2. It's only for Special or Ultimate Edition owners.
- Iron Grey Roan Ardennes, the pre-order War Horse, has 7 Health. Claim it at Valentine Stable after Chapter 2 if you pre-ordered.
Mistakes that waste time or money
- Hunting draft horses in the wild. Belgian and Suffolk coats come from wagons, coaches and carts, and so do the Shires except Raven Black. None of the draft coats spawn in the wild.
- Going to Blackwater or Tumbleweed too early. Their stable horses wait for Epilogue Part 1, including Rose Grey Bay, Silver Dapple Pinto, and Turkoman Dark Bay and Silver.
- Picking a Morgan or Kentucky Saddler for stats. Every Morgan has 2 Health, and most Kentucky Saddlers top out at 3 Speed. Pick them for looks.
Story horses (spoilers)
Spoilers ahead. These horses come from story moments:
- Cremello Gold Dutch Warmblood comes from finishing The Veteran IV after Chapter 6.
- Raven Black Shire is kept after finishing Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego in Chapter 2.
- Seal Brown Thoroughbred is an Epilogue reward at Beecher's Hope.
For saddles and gear, see Equipment. Other wildlife is covered in Animals, and Story Mode goals are on the Challenges guide.
FAQ
Are Red Dead Online horses included here?
No. These horses are Story Mode only. Red Dead Online has its own horse system, with rank unlocks and coats that aren't in Story Mode. Its values can change, so check the Red Dead Online hub before you plan an Online horse.
Why did a horse cost less than the price here?
The prices here are base stable prices. Honor discounts can lower what you pay. Sale prices at stables and Horse Fences change with your bonding level, so they aren't in these prices.
Can every platform get the newer Story Mode horses?
Not at the same time. The later coats arrived in updates, and the rollout differed by platform. The Red Chestnut Arabian came to PC in November 2019, PS4 in December 2019 and Xbox One in January 2020. If a horse like that is missing, your version may not have that update yet.
Do bonding and tack change these stats?
Yes. The bars here are base scores without tack or saddle bonuses. Bonding and tack can change them in game, so use the numbers to compare horses, not to predict exactly how one will ride.
