Journey Mode characters start with a basic pair of Fledgling Wings. In a normal world, the first wings you can count on are Angel or Demon Wings, which you craft after defeating the Wall of Flesh and entering Hardmode. Wings are accessories that let your character fly for a few seconds at a time, and some are far stronger than others.
| Wings | How to get them | When to aim for them |
|---|---|---|
| Fledgling Wings | Starting item in Journey Mode, or a rare drop from Skyware Chests, Sky Crates, and Azure Crates | Early, as a bonus |
| Angel Wings | Crafted with Feathers, Souls of Flight, and Souls of Light | First dependable Hardmode pair |
| Demon Wings | Crafted with Feathers, Souls of Flight, and Souls of Night | First dependable Hardmode pair |
| Harpy Wings | Crafted with Souls of Flight and a Giant Harpy Feather | Whenever the feather drops |
| Leaf Wings | Bought from the Witch Doctor after Plantera is defeated | Convenient purchase |
| Fishron Wings | Dropped by Duke Fishron | Strong pre-endgame goal |
| Solar Wings or Stardust Wings | Crafted with Lunar Fragments and Luminite Bars | After the Moon Lord, outside Expert and Master |
| Celestial Starboard | Dropped by the Moon Lord Treasure Bag | Expert and Master worlds only |
Fledgling Wings: The Early Bonus Before Hardmode
Fledgling Wings are the only wings you can find before Hardmode. Journey Mode characters begin with a pair, so they can glide and avoid fall damage from the start. In other worlds, you need luck. Skyware Chests in floating-island houses, Sky Crates you fish up in Space (including the Floating Lakes), and Azure Crates that appear in Hardmode each have only a 1 in 40 chance to contain them.
They only give 0.42 seconds of powered flight, so their real value is gliding and avoiding fall damage early on. They used to be a main reward from those chests and crates, but the 1.4.4 update turned them into a rare extra drop. Treat any pair you find as a bonus, and don't hold up your progress waiting for one, since Hardmode doesn't need them.

Gather Souls of Flight and Feathers for Hardmode Wings
Hardmode begins once you defeat the Wall of Flesh. Before you craft any of the strong pairs, you need a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil, so make one first if you don't have one yet. Angel, Demon, and Harpy Wings are all crafted there.
Souls of Flight come from Wyverns, which spawn in the Space layer during Hardmode. Every Wyvern drops them, but the amount depends on your world's mode. In Classic (the standard mode), each Wyvern drops 5 to 10, while Expert and Master worlds give 10 to 20 per Wyvern. Angel, Demon and Harpy Wings each need 20, so the number of Wyverns you need depends on your world.
Feathers come from Harpies, which also fly in the Space layer. Each Feather has a 50% drop chance, so you can collect the 10 Feathers you need while you hunt Wyverns.

Angel, Demon, or Harpy Wings: Choosing Your Hardmode Recipe
Angel and Demon Wings use the same Feathers and Souls of Flight, and they differ only in the final ingredient. Angel Wings use 15 Souls of Light, and Demon Wings use 15 Souls of Night. Souls of Light come from the Underground Hallow, while Souls of Night come from the Underground Corruption or Underground Crimson, so choose the one whose biome is easier to reach and farm in your world.
In Hardmode, each eligible enemy you kill in the right underground biome has a 1 in 5 chance to drop its soul. Bosses and certain enemies don't count, so farm ordinary monsters in that biome. Expect to spend some time on it, since the chance is only 1 in 5.
Angel Wings are a practical first step in early Hardmode. They remove fall damage and let you climb cliffs, explore caves, and build sky platforms for the mechanical boss fights.
Harpy Wings are a shortcut that skips the Light or Night farm. They need 20 Souls of Flight and one Giant Harpy Feather, which Harpies drop with only a 1 in 150 chance. You can get the feather before Hardmode, but the craft itself still depends on Hardmode materials, so treat Harpy Wings as a bonus if the feather shows up.
Leaf Wings and Fishron Wings Before the Endgame
Leaf Wings are a purchase, not a craft. After Plantera is defeated, the Witch Doctor sells them for 1 Platinum 50 Gold, but only while he's in the Jungle at night. They skip crafting entirely, but they aren't the wings to chase for the long run, so buy them if you have the gold and don't build your plans around them.
Duke Fishron drops Fishron Wings, with a 1 in 15 chance in Classic worlds and a 1 in 10 chance in Expert and Master worlds. They're among the strongest wings you can get before the endgame. They give 3 seconds of flight, accelerate faster than Angel Wings, and let you move normally through liquids.
The Best Endgame Wings in Terraria
Expert and Master worlds have the top target, Celestial Starboard. It drops from the Moon Lord Treasure Bag every time, but only in those two modes. It can hover and gives a boosted climb, and in flight it outperforms Solar Wings, Stardust Wings, Nebula Mantle, and Vortex Booster.
In Classic worlds, Solar Wings and Stardust Wings are the practical endgame crafts. Each needs 14 of the Lunar Fragment that matches the wing, plus 10 Luminite Bars, crafted at an Ancient Manipulator. Neither uses Souls of Flight, so the materials trip is different from the one for Hardmode wings.
