Rockstar announced on November 3, 2026 that digital pre-loading for Grand Theft Auto VI starts on November 10, 2026, ahead of the game's launch on November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-loading means downloading the game before release, so it's ready to play as soon as it becomes available. The start time depends on your console, and you'll need up to 212 GB of free space to download it.
| Version | Pre-load starts | Free space needed |
|---|---|---|
| PS5, digital | November 10, 2026, at midnight local time | At least 212 GB |
| Xbox Series X|S, digital | November 10, 2026, at 12 a.m. GMT worldwide | Up to 212 GB, depending on device |
| Boxed copy, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S | From November 12, 2026, when boxes reach retailers | Up to 212 GB, depending on device |
When GTA 6 Pre-Load Starts on PS5 and Xbox
On PS5, pre-loading opens at midnight local time on November 10, 2026. Because midnight falls at a different moment in each time zone, PS5 players won't all start at the same time. Xbox Series X|S works differently, with one start for everyone at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10. To find your Xbox start time, convert 12 a.m. GMT into your own time zone.
You may still see November 12 listed for digital pre-loading in older material. Rockstar's November 3 update moved digital pre-loading to November 10, so use that date for digital copies. November 12 is now the date when boxed copies are expected at retailers.
How Much Free Space GTA 6 Pre-Load Needs
Rockstar says the pre-load needs up to 212 GB of available space, depending on your device. On PS5, Sony recommends clearing at least 212 GB before pre-loading. Sony also says you can explore ways to extend your PS5 storage before launch.
Rockstar hasn't given a separate figure for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. If you own either one, plan around the 212 GB figure to be safe.
Steps to Get Ready for Automatic Pre-Load
Before November 10, work through these steps:
- Pre-order a digital copy. Players who pre-order digital versions can begin pre-loading. On PS5, you can pre-order through participating retailers or the PlayStation Store, which lists editions and pricing.
- Clear enough space. Free up the amount listed above for your console before the pre-load opens.
- Turn on the auto setting. On PS5, turn on auto-downloads. On Xbox Series X|S, turn on automatic updates. These settings let the pre-load start on its own.
- Keep the console ready. A PS5 needs to be powered on or in Rest Mode. An Xbox Series X|S needs to be powered on or in Sleep mode.
Pre-Loading GTA 6 From a Boxed Copy
Yes, a boxed copy can be pre-loaded. Boxes for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are expected at retailers starting November 12, 2026. There's no disc inside, just a download code, and that code is what you use to download the game.
Rockstar says the code can be used as soon as you receive it to support pre-loading on November 12. The November 10 start applies only to digital copies, so a boxed copy follows the November 12 timing.
