A photograph, a live capture and a bag of enriched tools are very different jobs. Active Matter investigations can ask for all of them in the same chain. The action matters as much as the destination.

Story quests and investigations
Match the raid and weapon to the objective
A kill only meets a weapon-specific objective when you use the named weapon class. A raid condition can be just as narrow: “standard raid” means the regular version, while a named variant means that variant. “Any listed variant” includes the versions named for that map, and “any raid” has no map restriction. If no raid condition is given, leave it open rather than borrowing one from another contract.
Some investigations send you between locations, so the next objective may need a different deployment. The maps and raids explain how the locations and their variants differ.
Extract, refine or finish the action on site
For a collect-and-extract objective, picking up the item is only part of the job. You need to bring it out of the raid. Refining and fusion are separate actions, so collecting the material alone does not meet an objective that asks you to process it.
Other tasks ask for photographs, vehicle deliveries or equipment placements. “Place and protect” includes defending the device; placing it alone does not cover the full objective. A live-specimen task needs a live capture, while a remains task asks for a different target.
Follow a sequence only when one is specified
Numbered stages show an objective sequence. An investigation marked “No published order” has an objective set without an established sequence; its list position does not tell you what comes first.
Separate gear rewards from new ways to get gear
An item reward gives you the item. A shop offer opens it for purchase, while a recipe opens a crafting or fusion route. Those unlocks can be the reason to pursue a weapon investigation even when its intermediate rewards are something else.
Step rewards belong to the individual objective. Completion rewards belong to the finished contract, and named follow-up quests have their own requirements. Keep those distinctions in mind when choosing which investigation to work on.
FAQ
Can teammates pass the same item around to complete a collection contract?
No. Passing a collected item to a teammate does not let both of you finish the contract with that same item. Collection progress tracks items that are dropped or transferred.
Why do some quest names appear more than once?
Separate contracts can share a title. Their required totals or completion rewards can differ, even when the target and weapon class match. Match the full objective and reward before treating them as the same job.
Where do I use the target detector in Night Incident: Crash Report?
Use it when you get close to the vehicle owner's documents in Downtown. It pinpoints the exact location within the search area; the photograph of the crash site is a separate task.
