WEBFISHING is a cozy, social fishing game where you sell your catch for cash and spend it on better gear. Bait and lures are the gear that decides what you pull out of the water. Bait gets used up as you fish and sets the quality of every fish you catch, while lures are equipped to change how a catch plays out, from which fish you get to how much bait a catch uses.

How bait and lures work when you fish
You need an equipped rod and bait before you can fish at all. When a fish bites, the game rolls a few possible fish from the zone you're in, and your equipped lure decides which one you get. Most lures keep the last fish rolled, while others pick the smallest, the largest, the highest tier, or a rare fish when one is among them. Your bait then sets the fish's quality, from plain Normal up to Alpha, the top rating.
Quality changes more than the stars alone suggest. Higher-quality fish are harder to land during the minigame, but they also earn much more XP. Each catch uses up bait, and some lures change how much. So choosing bait means weighing a tougher catch against a bigger reward.
How to unlock bait
Worms are the only bait you start with. The Bait Shop sells the rest, but you need a license for each type before it appears there. Licenses are bought at the Fishing Store, and they open up as your Camp Tier rises.
Crickets and Leeches come first at Tier 1, Minnows and Squid follow at Tier 2, and Nautilus and Gilded Worm are last at Tier 3. The first bait in each group is the cheaper license.
Buying a license also fills that bait up to your current limit, so it's ready to use right away. The price jumps a lot after Tier 2, so it pays to plan which license to save for next.
Which bait is best in WEBFISHING
Worms can only catch tier 1 and 2 fish, so they fall behind fast. Once you have a cricket license, there's little reason to keep using them. Crickets catch every tier and give the most Normal fish of any bait that can reach tier 3, so they make a solid everyday choice.
Leeches mostly give Normal and Shining fish, and Minnows spread their catches across Normal, Shining and Glistening. Squid brings in the most Glistening fish of any bait. The biggest gains come from Nautilus and Gilded Worm.
Gilded Worm brings in Radiant fish often and gives Alpha fish a small chance, but it's the priciest license. Nautilus is the better value for the money, with Opulent and Radiant fish making up most of its catches.
Keep in mind that Nautilus and Gilded Worm almost never give plain Normal fish. Switch back to crickets when you need those, such as for Journal entries at tier 3.
What lures change about each catch
Many lures change which fish you end up with. The Fly Hook takes the smallest fish from the group rolled, the Large Lure takes the biggest, and the Sparkling Lure takes the highest tier. The Golden Hook grabs a rare fish whenever one is in the group, which makes rare fish show up far more often, but it uses up a lot of bait every time.
Other lures save bait or add extra catches. The Efficient Lure sometimes uses no bait at all, while the Large Lure, Sparkling Lure and Double Hook sometimes use extra bait. The Double Hook can also sometimes hand you a second catch, which might be a fish or junk.
Some lures put cash in your pocket or help during the minigame. The Lucky Hook pays a small share of each catch's value in cash, and the Challenge Lure pays for pop-ups you click during the minigame, though missing them makes the minigame much harder. The Quick Jig raises rod power and reel speed, so you finish the minigame sooner. The Patient Lure waits for your input before the minigame starts.
The rest help you find or reach fish. The Attractive Angler makes fish bite more often, but because of the fish timer, the real gain is smaller than it sounds. The Magnet Lure raises the odds of treasure chests and junk, and the Salty and Fresh Lures let you catch saltwater or freshwater fish in any body of water. The Shower Lure can summon a rain cloud after a catch, so players under it can catch rain fish.
How to unlock lures
You buy lures at the Fishing Store, and each one opens at a set Camp Tier. The cheapest lures come first at Tier 1. The Fly Hook and Patient Lure are the cheapest of all, and the Lucky Hook and Challenge Lure are close behind.
Tier 2 adds the Salty and Fresh Lures, which are cheap, plus the Quick Jig, Efficient Lure and Magnet Lure, which cost more. At Tier 3, a batch of lures opens at the same mid-range price: the Large Lure, Sparkling Lure, Double Hook, Attractive Angler and Shower Lure. The Golden Hook is the last to open, at Camp Tier 4, and it's the most expensive lure of all.
Which bait and lures to buy first
If you're just starting out, a cricket license is the first purchase to make. It gets you off worms, which are stuck with the lowest tiers, and it's a cheap buy. The Lucky Hook is a good second pick at the same low price, since its cash bonus adds up on every catch.
Once you can reach Tier 2, the Efficient Lure is a solid buy at a mid-range price, because it can save bait on some catches. Save the Golden Hook for later. It uses a lot of bait every time, so it's only worth it when you have plenty of bait and are chasing rare fish.
FAQ
What is the Bare Hook?
The Bare Hook is the lure you start with, and it's unlocked by default, so you never need to buy it. It has no special effect, which means your catch comes down to your rod and bait alone.
How many bait can I hold?
Each bait type has its own limit, so a full stock of worms doesn't take room from your crickets. You can raise the limit at the Fishing Store in steps, and each step costs more than the last.
Why doesn't my Magnet Lure work in some zones?
Some zones block certain kinds of catch. In those zones, junk, rain fish and treasure chests can't be caught at all, so the Magnet Lure has no effect.
How do I switch bait?
Open your Tacklebox and pick the bait you want. You can change it at any time, so you can switch to a stronger bait for rare catches and back to a cheaper one for everyday fishing.
