The Long Dark is a survival game set in a frozen wilderness in northern Canada, where the main threats are cold, hunger, and wildlife. Your tools and weapons are how you deal with all three. Hand tools let you chop firewood, cut up furniture for materials, and open locked doors and cars, while guns, bows, and a distress pistol help you hunt and keep predators away. Fire starters, lights, cooking and fishing gear, and repair supplies cover the rest, and most of it wears down with use.

Hand Tools: What Each One Is For
Hand tools do most of the everyday work, from chopping firewood to getting into buildings. Each one has its own job, so most players carry several instead of relying on one. The hatchet is how you get firewood from trees, and it also breaks up furniture and branches. The hunting knife is quick and handles cloth and cardboard.
The hacksaw cuts through metal furniture, and it's how you get the scrap metal most repairs need. It also cuts open car batteries for lead. The prybar opens locked doors and cars, but it can't be repaired, so it has a limited life. The heavy hammer breaks furniture, and it's the only tool you can use to craft your own tools at a forge.
In a struggle with a wolf, the tool you're holding shapes how the fight goes. The hunting knife is fast but low on damage, though it reliably causes bleeding if you win. The hatchet hits hard at a medium pace, the prybar sits in the middle on both, and the heavy hammer is slow but powerful. A knife and a hacksaw cover most early needs, with a hatchet added for firewood and a prybar for locked doors and cars.
Guns and Bows: What Each One Is For
The hunting rifle is the main gun for hunting, and the revolver is mostly for defense, used to scare animals away. Both wear down with use, so guns need upkeep like any other tool. The Tales from the Far Territory expansion adds more rifle and revolver variants. The Hunter's Revolver has a longer barrel for more reach, while the Warden's Revolver is lighter and quicker to aim.
The bow is the quiet choice. Its shots are silent, so nearby animals often don't notice, and an arrow that hits causes bleeding, so the animal often bleeds out on its own. Simple arrows are the dependable option, and they work on all wildlife. They're made from birch saplings, which cure into shafts, and feathers, which turn up near carcasses that crows circle.
Fire-hardened arrows are the quick version, made at a campfire from cheaper materials. They're fragile, though, and they only work on small game like rabbits and ptarmigans. The distress pistol is a different kind of tool. It fires flares, and players rely on it to stop a bear that's charging, since flares make the bear stop short. Its main job is scaring predators off, not hunting, so save its shots for real danger.
How to Make Ammunition from Car Batteries
Rifle and revolver rounds start with car batteries. Not every vehicle has one, but when it does, a hacksaw cuts the battery apart to get scrap lead. The lead goes into the Ammunition Forge and comes out as bullets, and the Ammunition Work Bench turns those bullets into rifle or revolver ammunition. You'll find the bench in Bleak Inlet and Blackrock.
Gunsmithing is the skill behind all of this. A higher level gives you better rounds with fewer misfires, and working at the bench and forge and reading research books all raise it.
Fire Starters and Lights
Fire keeps you warm and lets you cook, so the starter in your pack matters. Matches are the everyday option, but each attempt uses one up whether or not it works. The firestriker is the strongest starter, but it can't be repaired and it's very rare, so save it for when you really need it.
The magnifying lens never wears out, but it only works outdoors in clear, sunny weather. Accelerant and gunpowder greatly improve your odds, and gunpowder only lasts for a limited number of uses. Light is limited too, so use it carefully. A lit flare gives off light and keeps wolves at a distance, but it burns out after a while.
The Flashlight and Miner's Flashlight don't use batteries you can swap. Their batteries only recharge during an aurora or glimmer fog, so they work for a while after one. Glimmer fog is the daytime version of the aurora, added by the Tales from the Far Territory expansion. Lanterns burn lantern fuel, a kind of kerosene. Storm lanterns can be topped up from a jerry can or a bottle of lantern fuel, and bottles turn up often in houses and cabins. You can also make fuel by cooking fish.
Cooking and Fishing Gear
Cooking gear turns raw meat and fish into food you can eat. Fishing starts with an open hole in the ice, which you clear before you can fish. Fishing tackle does the catching, and a lure attached to it improves your odds at rarer fish. Lures are made from wire, revolver shell casings, or acorns, and wire bundles give the best odds for rare fish but are the hardest to find.
The fishing tip-up is the hands-off option. You set it over a hole, and when a fish bites, it tips toward the hole and scrap-metal chimes ring so you know to come check. Each catch means clearing the hole if needed, retrieving the tip-up, and setting it again. It's built at a workbench from sticks, cloth, scrap metal, and fishing tackle, and it works best alongside fishing by hand rather than in place of it.
Repair and Crafting
Tools wear down as you use them, and once an item wears all the way out, it can't be repaired anymore. Most repairs use scrap metal, which mostly comes from cutting up metal furniture with a hacksaw. You also need a repair kit, either simple tools or quality tools, and quality tools give a better chance of success and a faster repair. A failed attempt still uses up metal, so have enough on hand before you start. The heavy hammer is the exception, since fir firewood repairs it instead.
Whetstones sharpen blades like hatchets and knives, while sewing kits and fishing tackle handle clothing.
Research Books and Skills
Research books are a quick way to build skills, and they only show up in Survival mode. Each title trains one skill, and the list covers archery, carcass harvesting, cooking, fire-starting, ice fishing, mending, gunsmithing, and both rifle and revolver shooting. The Frontier Shooting Guide and Advanced Guns Guns Guns! train rifle, while the Small Arms Handbook trains the revolver.
Reading takes in-game time, and you can break it into several sessions. Duplicate copies are scattered across the map, and each copy gives its own bonus, so you can read the same title more than once. Skill progress is lost when you die, so it's worth reading books early in a run. Books can also be burned to start a fire, but other materials make better tinder, so reading is usually the better use.
FAQ
Can you throw a flare to stop a charging bear?
No. Throwing a flare at a charging bear does nothing, so the distress pistol is the tool that works.
Can a Milling Machine repair a gun?
Yes. During an aurora, a Milling Machine repairs tools, including firearms, using only scrap metal, so it's a useful option when you don't have a repair kit.
What happens if your fishing line snaps?
The lure attached to your tackle is lost, and you have to craft a new one. It's worth carrying spare materials if you fish often.
