Travelers are the characters you play as in Shape of Dreams, a co-op roguelike where every run is a fresh try that ends when you fall. Each one fights in its own way, from long-range attacks to close-up battles. Lacerta and Mist are available from the start, and the rest unlock by completing tasks in the game. Knowing how each one plays helps you pick the Traveler that suits the way you like to fight.

What Travelers Do in Shape of Dreams
A Traveler shapes how your whole run feels. Each one has a combat style, such as ranged or melee, and a role like mage, tank, assassin or support. Some focus on dealing damage, while others heal or support the rest of your team.
Each Traveler also has an Identity Memory, a passive effect that works in the background. Because it's always active, you don't need to press anything to use it.
You tune each Traveler with Memories and Essences. Memories are active abilities you cast, and Essences attach to a Memory and change how it works. There are plenty of options, so the same Traveler can play very differently from one build to the next.
Which Travelers Are Easiest to Start With
Travelers vary a lot in how hard they are to play, so picking one that fits your experience makes your first runs go much smoother. If you're just getting started, Bismuth is rated Very easy and Lacerta is rated Easy, so they're the friendliest places to begin.
Yubar, Vesper and Nachia are rated Medium, which suits you once you've got the basics of a run down. Mist is available from the start but rated Hard, so save it for later. Aurena and Shell are rated Very hard, and they're best left until you know the game well.
Cetus has no listed rating. Working up from the easier ratings to the harder ones is a sensible way to pace your unlocks.
How to Unlock Travelers in Shape of Dreams
Lacerta and Mist are open from the start, so you can learn the game right away. Every other Traveler is locked at first and needs a specific task to open. The tasks vary, and each one pushes you toward a different part of the game and a different style of fighting, so unlocking the full roster means trying a bit of everything.
Some tasks ask for a set total of Dream Dust. Others ask you to defeat a particular enemy many times, heal a large amount of health, or keep a high movement speed for a few seconds. These tasks test how you play rather than how much you collect.
Cetus is the odd one out, since the unlock is about exploring rather than fighting. Cetus opens by digging up 8 Piles of Snow in the snowy mountains during your runs.
FAQ
Does Cetus stay unlocked after I dig up the piles?
Yes. Once you've dug through the 8th pile, Cetus stays unlocked for good and can be picked in every run after that, so you won't have to search for piles again.
What are Lacerta's Identity Memories?
Lacerta has two to choose from. Salamander Powder turns every 4th basic attack into a critical strike that explodes for Fire damage around the target. Double Tap, which unlocks through the BFR 9000 achievement, makes Lacerta's next basic attack fire twice after a Memory or a dodge, so using your abilities and moving around pays off.
What are Aurena's Identity Memories?
Dismantling Claw makes Aurena's attacks deal extra damage and restore Health on every enemy hit, and both effects are doubled against bosses. Beautiful Threat, which unlocks through the Deceiving Looks achievement, turns her basic attacks ranged.
