Interactive parts are the pieces in Scrap Mechanic that do something once you wire them up. Blocks make up the body of a vehicle or machine, but engines turn its wheels, seats let you drive, pistons push and pull, and logic gates decide when everything switches on. If you have never played, think of them as the working parts that turn a pile of scrap into something that moves and reacts on its own.

How Interactive Parts Work Together
Interactive parts run on signals. One part sends an on or off signal, and another part reacts to it. Switches, buttons, seats, triggers, sensors and timers send signals, while engines, bearings, pistons, thrusters and controllers act on them. Logic gates sit in between and combine signals, so a machine can respond to more than one thing at a time.
Nothing moves until a signal reaches it, so every working machine needs a starting part. Build and weld the frame first with the Weld Tool, then link the parts with the Connect Tool. If you are learning, start with the Driver's Seat, the Controller and logic gates, since they handle most of the control in a complex build.
Engines, Thrusters and Fuel
Engines are what make a build turn. The Gas Engine and Scrap Gas Engine run on gasoline, and the Electric Engine runs on batteries. Once switched on, an engine spins the bearings connected to it, and a Driver's Seat, a Trigger or a Controller can switch it on. Parts in Creative mode need no fuel, so you can test a design without running dry.
Thrusters give a build push or lift, and they need a Trigger or Driver's Seat wired to them before they fire. They burn gasoline too, so a nearby Gas Container is worth having.
Seats, Triggers and Controllers
Triggers and Driver's Seats are how you start a machine. A Driver's Seat turns your keyboard into controls. When it's wired to a bearing through an engine, W and S spin that bearing forward and backward, and when it's wired straight to a bearing, A and D steer.
When several pistons or bearings need to move in a set order, a Controller handles the timing so you don't have to. One trigger or seat starts it, and it plays its programmed moves in order each time it gets a signal. A loop option repeats the sequence, and speed settings control how quickly the moves play.
Pistons and Bearings
Pistons push and pull, and bearings turn. A bearing stays still until an engine, a Driver's Seat or a Controller drives it, so it does nothing on its own.
Logic Gates, Timers and Sensors
Logic gates decide what happens when signals arrive, and each one runs in one of six modes shown on its display. AND turns on only when all its inputs are on, and OR turns on when any input is on. XOR turns on when an odd number of inputs are on, NAND when at least one input is off, NOR only when every input is off, and XNOR when an even number are on.
Timers hold back a signal for up to 60 seconds, set in whole seconds or single ticks. They delay every change rather than just the first, so a queue of on and off signals comes out in the same order, only later. That keeps a timed sequence running in the right order.
Gates can also remember. Wire several gates into a loop, and the signal stays on or off until something changes it, which is how simple memory works in a machine.
Sensors pick up things nearby and send a signal to a gate or timer. The basic Sensor reaches ten blocks, and its range grows with Survival upgrades. The Big Sensor reaches 64 blocks and senses through walls.
Storage and Material Handling
Storage parts keep the items your machines need close at hand. The Large Chest links to vacuum pipes and vacuum pumps, and Small Chests also work with a Vacuum Pump. Vacuum pipes move items between containers and machines, so a chest can keep a machine stocked without you carrying things by hand.
Electric engines run on batteries, and a Battery Container keeps an electric engine supplied for longer.
Mounted Weapons and Bot Capsules
The Mountable Spud Gun is a fixed version of the spud gun that you attach to a build. In Survival it needs a Potato Ammo Container linked to it, and it won't fire until that container holds potatoes.
Bot capsules are the other side of this category. Hit one with a weapon and it releases a robot or an animal.
Where to Get Interactive Parts
Creative mode gives you the full set of building parts from the start, so it's the simplest place to test wiring. A few parts, such as the Craftbot and the scrap engines and seats, are Survival only.
Survival means earning your parts. The Craftbot makes most of them from Metal Blocks, Component Kits and Circuit Boards, and upgrades cost Component Kits, with Multi Component Kits needed for the Turret Seat and Plasma Drill. Some parts, such as logic gates, timers, sensors, saddles, drills and saw blades, can also be traded for at the Farmers Hideout, using Caged Farmers or produce crates. Others, such as the Office Chair, unlock after a Schematicbot scan.
Challenge Mode limits which parts you can use, so it isn't a place to build freely. The Challenge Builder, used to make your own challenges, gives access to every Creative part along with some that appear only there.
FAQ
Is there a NOT gate in Scrap Mechanic?
There isn't a separate NOT gate. To invert a signal, wire a single input into a NAND or NOR gate. Every gate also adds a tiny delay of one tick (0.025 seconds) to its output, which adds up when you chain many gates together.
Why won't my vehicle move even though it's wired up?
Check whether the creation is sitting on a Lift, because while it's on one, every bearing on it locks in place. Once it's off the Lift, the bearings will respond to your engine, seat or Controller again.
