Blocks are the basic building pieces in Scrap Mechanic, the sandbox game where you build vehicles, machines and bases. Almost everything you make starts with them, from a simple wall to a full frame. They come in materials like wood, metal, stone and glass, and each one has its own weight, strength and fire behavior. Once you know what they are and where to get them, picking the right block for each part of a build gets much easier.

Block Materials and Their Levels
Blocks come from a handful of materials: wood, scrap metal, stone-type materials such as concrete, brick, tile and sand, glass, plastic, and specialty pieces like cardboard and carpet. Many of them come in numbered levels, such as Metal Block Level 1, 2 and 3. The material you pick comes down to what the part has to do.
Wedges: The Sloped Blocks
A wedge is a block with a slope cut into it, which makes it handy for ramps, roofs and angled parts. Where a flat block would leave a stair-step, a wedge gives you a clean slope. Not every block has a wedge, so check before you plan a slope around one.
In Survival, the Saw Table turns a stack of blocks into matching wedges, one wedge per block. Many wedges have to be unlocked first by a Schematicbot scan. Concave Wedge and Staircase Wedge are special shapes made at the Craftbot.
A wedge's stats usually match the block it came from, but not always. Some wood and plastic wedges float less than their full block, so check the numbers before you build something that has to stay afloat.
How to Get Blocks in Survival
In Survival, most blocks are made at the Craftbot from a few base blocks. Scrap Wood Blocks come from ruin chests and make Wood Block Level 1, and Scrap Metal Blocks make Metal Block Level 1. Scrap Stone Blocks make Sand and Brick, Sand plus Water and Chemicals makes Concrete, and Sand plus Ember makes Glass. Crude Oil makes Plastic and Bubble Plastic.
Level 2 and Level 3 blocks are crafted from the level below plus higher-level metal, Ember or Water. Each step up takes more to make, so save the higher levels for the parts that need them. A few blocks come from trades at the Farmers Hideout or the Mining Hub, and Ice Block only comes from loot crates.
Blocks in Creative and Challenge Mode
Creative gives you every block except the Challenge Mode pieces, so the only limit is what you want to build. Those Challenge Mode pieces only appear in Challenge Mode, and they aren't part of the regular building mix. Challenge Mode is built around the Master Mechanic Trials, a set of testing challenges.
Block Properties and Which Blocks Matter Most
Every block has its own numbers for weight, durability, friction and buoyancy. Weight is how heavy a piece is, durability is how much punishment it takes before it breaks, and buoyancy decides whether it floats. Friction controls how surfaces grip or slide against each other. Knowing these numbers lets you pick a block for the job instead of guessing.
For most early builds, the basic wood and metal blocks matter most. They're the first blocks you work with in Survival, and they're what you'll use for a first shelter and a first vehicle.
Fire and Flammable Blocks
Wood blocks, in every level and including Scrap Wood, can catch fire. Cardboard, Carpet, Insulation, Bubble Plastic and Barrier blocks can too. Concrete, metal, glass, brick, stone, plaster, tile and plain Plastic don't burn.
FAQ
Can I use a Creative build in Survival?
Yes. The Scrap City Garage can build creations made in either Creative or Survival.
Which wedges can I cut at the Saw Table without a Schematicbot scan?
The basic ones are ready straight away: Wood and Metal Wedges at Levels 1 and 2, Concrete Wedges at Levels 1 and 2, and the Glass, Sand, Ice, Cardboard, Solid Net and Scrap wedges. Most decorative and Level 3 wedges stay locked until a Schematicbot scan.
