All 12 Crops and How Farming Works in Scrap Mechanic

Updated on November 1, 2026 (3 days ago)

Crops are the plants you grow on farmland in Scrap Mechanic's Survival mode. They feed your character and supply materials for cooking, building, and fighting. The catch is that planting crops sets off robot raids, so it helps to understand how farming works before you put in a big field.

How Farming Works in Scrap Mechanic

Every field starts with soil. Each Soil Bag turns one patch of ground into a soil tile, so you lay several in a grid to make a bigger field. Once the soil is down, plant seeds on it and let them grow.

Crops need water to grow. You can pour it on by hand with a water bucket at first, and later you can set up pumps, pipes, and other parts to water your fields automatically. Fertilizer is optional and speeds up growth.

Every crop shares the same base growth time, so the seed you pick doesn't change how long you wait. Broccoli and pineapple are the only ones that need a second watering. Once a crop is ripe, you harvest it.

Where to Find Crop Seeds

Tomato, potato, and cotton seeds are available from the start, so you can begin farming right away. Carrot, redbeet, banana, blueberry, orange, broccoli, and pineapple seeds unlock one at a time as you complete Grow Labs 1 to 7.

To buy more, pack 20 crops into a Produce Crate at a packing station and take it to the Farmers Hideout. There, one crate buys 40 seeds of the same crop.

Chili seeds are the exception. One Blueberry Crate buys 20 of them, or you can pay 500 credits at the Mining Hub. Cotton and pigment flower seeds come from wild plants you find out in the world.

What Crops Are Used For

Most crops are eaten for health, and a few go further than that. Tomato, carrot, redbeet, and potato all go into Cookbot meals, including the Pizza Burger, Veggie Burger, and Revival Baguette.

Potato is the one crop that isn't eaten. It's ammo for the Spudgun, though it still goes into Cookbot meals. Chili hurts when eaten, so it goes into explosive canisters and Hot Potato instead.

Orange goes into Sunshake and Refined Lemonium. Cotton goes into seats, beds, and garments, and Pigment Flower goes into Paint Ammo, beeswax, and decorative plants.

Which Crops Matter Most

Tomato, potato, and cotton are the crops to lean on early, since they're the first you can plant and they cover food, ammo, and furniture. You'll want a steady supply of each while you get your bearings.

Pineapple and broccoli are the ones to plan around. They carry the most raid value of any crop, so a patch of them can draw a much stronger attack than a larger field of low-value crops. Plant them once you're ready to handle what they bring.

How Robot Raids Work on Crop Fields

Raids start when you plant crops, not at night. Once your planting adds value, the game shows a "LICENSE BREACH DETECTED!" warning and gives you 60 seconds to prepare. Planting more during that timer raises the raid level, so a rush of planting makes the attack bigger.

The raid level comes from the total value of what you planted, not from how many plants you have. Each crop adds its own value, and cotton and pigment flower are worth nothing, so they never trigger a raid.

Haybots and green Totebots show up at low levels. Red and yellow Totebots and Tapebots join them at higher levels, and Farmbots arrive at the top. Tapebots and Farmbots go after you rather than your crops, so you'll need to deal with them yourself.

If you'd rather keep raids small, plant in smaller batches. Each countdown then carries less value, so the attack stays smaller.

FAQ

Q.

What weapon works best against raid bots?

Spud weapons do the job faster than the Sledgehammer. A Haybot takes five Sledgehammer hits but only two Spud Shotgun shots at point-blank range, and Farmbots can't be hurt by the Sledgehammer at all, so keep potato ammo on hand before you plant anything valuable.

Q.

Can water help defend crops from Haybots?

Yes. A splash from a Water Bucket or Water Cannon briefly stuns a Haybot, which gives you a free moment to hit it before it reaches your plants.
