MONGIL: STAR DIVE is a free-to-play action RPG on mobile and PC, where you catch creatures called Monsterlings and fight alongside characters. Characters are the people you bring into battle, and each one has a role, an element and a rarity of four or five stars. Those three traits shape how a character fits into a team. Understanding them is the easiest way to start building a team that holds up in battle.

How Characters Work in Battle
Battles run in real time, and you fight with a team of three characters. You can switch between them during a fight, so the character on the field is always one you chose to bring in. A fight changes as it goes, and swapping lets you bring in the right job when the moment calls for it.
That's why it helps to think in jobs rather than raw strength. Three characters who all do the same job leave gaps, since a boss has to be opened up before the big damage can land.
Fighter, Destroyer, Assassin and Support Roles
Every character belongs to one of four roles, and each one has its own job. Fighters are the backbone of most teams, dealing steady damage. Destroyers fill up a boss's Stagger Gauge, and once it's full, the boss is staggered and opens a Burst window. Assassins make the most of that window with outsized damage, and Supports keep the team going with healing and buffs for their allies.
The roles lean on each other, which is why every slot on a team should have a job. Without a Destroyer, the Burst window opens more slowly, so an Assassin has less to work with against a boss with a stagger phase. A common layout puts a Fighter or Assassin first, a Destroyer second and a Support third, so each slot has a clear purpose.
Elements and Weaknesses
Characters come in five elements: Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind and Earth. Each element has its own group, and the Wind group includes Esther, Jiwon, Sangun, Chloe, Nagi and Bonnie. Elements matter most against enemies, because enemies have elemental weaknesses. Hitting a weakness deals more damage than a normal hit, so it pays to check a boss's weakness before you choose who to bring.
Elements decide how hard you hit, and roles decide what a character does for the team. Keep those two ideas separate, and building a team gets a lot simpler.
Best Characters to Build Around
If you only prioritize one role, make it Destroyer, since that's the role that makes the Burst window possible. Flare is the Fire Destroyer, so she's the piece that opens a boss up for an Assassin, and pairing her with Esther, the Wind Assassin, gives you both halves of that loop.
Jiwon, a Wind Support, fills the third slot by keeping the other two healthy and boosted. Esther, Flare and Jiwon mix Wind and Fire, and together they cover the Assassin, Destroyer and Support jobs a team of three needs.
If you'd rather open with a Fighter, Mina is a Fire Fighter, so she takes on the damage job for a Fire team. Ophelia (Ice), Penny (Lightning), Gabi (Earth) and Sangun (Wind) fill that same job on their elements.
How to Get Characters
Characters come from summons, the game's gacha system, where you spend in-game currency for a chance at one. Five-star characters are the rarer pulls, but you don't need every top name to build a working team. Four-star characters are real options too, so a team doesn't have to rely on 5-stars.
FAQ
Are 4-star characters worth using?
Yes, and each role has 4-star options. Cloud (Ice), Reina (Lightning) and Ellie (Earth) are 4-star Destroyers, Angel and Leeho are 4-star Fire Assassins, and Benjamin and Yeonhwa are 4-star Lightning Assassins. Verna (Fire) and Sera (Ice) are 4-star Fighters, and Daisy is a 4-star Earth Support.
Should I spread upgrades across many characters?
It's usually better to focus on one or two characters, since spreading resources thin leaves each one weaker. A Destroyer and an Assassin make a practical core because their jobs depend on each other.
