In Limbus Company, Identities are alternate versions of the game's twelve main characters, called Sinners. Each one comes from another Mirror World and is attached to a Sinner, and the Identity you choose decides the skills and passives that Sinner brings into battle. That is why two versions of the same character can fight very differently. You get Identities through Extraction, the game's pull system, and you grow them by leveling and uptying them over time.

What Identities Are and How They Connect to Sinners and E.G.O
An Identity is a second version of a Sinner, pulled from another Mirror World and joined to that Sinner. In the story, the Sinner keeps only fragments of what the Identity knew afterward. In play, each Identity belongs to one Sinner and comes with its own skills, passives, stats and traits, so the Identity you choose matters a lot. You keep them as Identity Cards and pick which one each Sinner uses.
E.G.O is a separate system that people often mix up with Identities. E.G.O are extra powers that a Sinner equips alongside their Identity, and using one takes specific conditions and a resource cost. A Sinner's Sin resistances follow the E.G.O used most recently, not the Identity, so the two systems shape a fight in different ways.
How Identity Skills and Speed Work in Battle
Each Identity brings at least three attack skills and one defense skill. Skills 1 and 2 can be used right away. Each turn, new skill slots are added in deployment order. In regular encounters you chain skills across the Dashboard, while in Focused Encounters you also pick each slot's target yourself.
Every unit has its own speed range, and the game picks a value from that range at the start of each turn. Higher speed acts earlier. When two skills are aimed at each other, they clash. Both sides flip coins, the side with lower Clash Power loses a coin, and clashes repeat until one side runs out.
The winner's leftover coins become a one-sided attack, and Sanity shifts the odds of heads, so it matters too. Every attack has a damage type, which is slash, pierce or blunt, and a Sin affinity. The seven affinities are Wrath, Lust, Sloth, Gluttony, Gloom, Pride and Envy. A unit's resistance to both decides how much damage it takes.
How Stagger and Passives Work for Identities
The Identity equipped decides how many Stagger thresholds its Sinner has, from one to three. Thresholds are a percentage of max HP, so they scale with level. A unit staggers when damage crosses a threshold while it has no shield up, or when it gets hit while already below a threshold it hasn't triggered yet, even for zero damage.
For the rest of that turn and the next, a staggered unit can't use skills, and its physical resistances become Fatal, so it takes double damage from physical hits. Crossing several thresholds in one turn raises the stagger level, up to Stagger++.
Every Identity has at least one combat passive and one support passive. Combat passives work while the Identity is on the field and usually help only that unit. Support passives work while the Identity is equipped but benched, and they usually help deployed allies who meet a condition, such as having the most HP or SP. Both kinds switch on based on the Sin resources or Sin Resonance your team has at the start of the turn.
How to Get Identities Through Extraction
Identities come from Extraction. A single pull costs Lunacy or one Extraction Ticket, and a ten-pull costs more, but one Decaextraction Ticket covers all ten. Every ten-pull guarantees at least one 00 Identity. Most single pulls land on a 0 Identity, while 000 Identities are the hardest to get, and some pulls return E.G.O instead.
Pity exists so a long run of bad luck doesn't leave you empty-handed. Each pull on a limited-time banner adds Ideality, and once it's full you can exchange it for a featured 000 Identity. Limited-time target banners also raise the chances for their featured Identities.
If you want a guaranteed 000, the 000 Identity Assured Extraction uses a 000 Guarantee Decaextraction Ticket. Every ten-pull on that banner guarantees at least one 000 Identity, and E.G.O can't come from it. Seasonal versions only include that season's Identities.
What 0, 00 and 000 Rarity Means for Identities
Every Identity is rated 0, 00 or 000. Rarity mostly changes two things: how hard the Identity is to pull and how much Thread it takes to uptie. The 000 tier is the rarest in pulls, and a full uptie path for a 000 costs much more Thread than one for a 0. Leveling costs the same at any rarity.
Rarity doesn't tell you how strong an Identity is in a fight. A 00 Identity can be a better pick than a 000 one, so judge each one by its own kit and how well it fits your team.
How to Level Up and Uptie Identities
Each Identity keeps its own level, so leveling one has no effect on the others. The level cap is lower for new players and rises as you move through the story. Battles earn EXP for the Identities that fight, and benched Identities still earn some, just less. EXP earned above the cap is lost.
Uptying, or uptie as players call it, works in four tiers, and each Identity tracks its own tier. Tier I is the base kit, and Tier II unlocks the combat passive. Tier III unlocks Skill 3 and the support passive, and for most Identities it also unlocks post-uptie art and story.
Tier IV upgrades skills and passives further, and it gives the Defense Skill a Sin affinity if it didn't have one. Uptying costs Thread, and the final tier also needs Sinner Egoshards.
FAQ
Do Façades change how an Identity plays?
No. Façades are cosmetic only, so they change how an Identity looks but not its skills, passives or stats.
Do I need to uptie an Identity before I can use it?
No. Tier I is the base kit, so a new Identity is ready to fight as soon as you get it. Uptying is what adds the combat passive, Skill 3 and the support passive, which is why it's worth the Thread for the Identities you rely on.
Do I need E.G.O to use an Identity?
No. E.G.O are optional extras that a Sinner equips, and an Identity works on its own kit without them. E.G.O add extra powers and can shift the Sinner's Sin resistances, so whether to use one depends on the fight.
