Icarus is a survival game set on a dangerous planet, where you play a Prospector sent out on missions to gather materials and stay alive. Your weapons do two jobs: they keep creatures off you, and they let you hunt wildlife for the fur, leather and bone you need to build better gear. The game gives you knives, spears, javelins, bows, crossbows, firearms, flamethrowers, grenades and launchers, and each one fills a different role in a fight.

How Weapons Unlock in Icarus
Weapons come with your progress through the Tech Tree, which has five tiers. Each tier opens new crafting stations and materials, so early on you make weapons from what you can gather, like stone, bone, wood and plant fiber. Later tiers bring metal and advanced materials, which let you craft stronger weapons.
Workshop weapons follow a separate path. You research and craft them at the Orbital Workshop using Ren or Exotics, the game's two currencies, and you'll see names like Shengong, Inaris, MXC and Larkwell Martinez across the knives, spears and bows.
Knives and Spears for Close Fights
Knives are the tool you'll reach for most. They're fast weapons for close range, and they double as your skinning tool for fur, leather, bone and raw meat, so you can use them before you unlock the Skinning Bench. Better knives get more out of each animal, so upgrading is worth the effort.
Spears have more reach than other close-range weapons, so you can hit from a little farther away. They're two-handed, though, which means you can't pair one with a shield.
Throwing Knives and Javelins
Only the throwing variant of a knife can be thrown. Regular knives stay in your hand, so you'll need the throwing version if you want to hurl one.
Javelins are the thrown version of the spear, and they hit hard at range. They can't be used up close and take a while to charge before a throw. They also cost far more to craft than bolts, so save them for targets that matter. They come in many materials, from bone to titanium.
Bows and Crossbows for Hunting
Bows are ranged weapons that let you engage creatures from a distance. They pair especially well with stealth, which makes them very effective for hunting. You start with a wood bow and work up through the longbow, recurve and compound, and the recurve and compound need a Forge or Foundry to craft. Arrows come in many types, from stone and bone tips to fire, poison and bleed arrows.
Crossbows fire bolts and hit hard, but they reload slowly, so they're a risky pick when a fight starts without warning. Keep a bow or a close-range weapon ready as a backup. The Javelin Launcher is a large crossbow that fires javelins instead of bolts, and it's a legendary weapon you can upgrade with attachments.
Firearms in Icarus
Firearms cover pistols, rifles and shotguns. They arrive later in your progress, so you won't have them early on. They hit hard, but they run on ammo, and every shot uses up your supply. Guns also have their own talent branch, so switching to one usually means rethinking your build.
The Orbital Workshop sells CHAC guns as well. Save firearms for the toughest threats, like bosses, and let your bows and knives handle the rest.
Grenades, Flamethrowers and Launchers
These heavy weapons are for moments when a bow or knife won't cut it, like a crowd of creatures or a tough boss. Frag grenades come later in the Tech Tree and need the Smoke Grenade unlocked first. You hold the throw to charge it, and the fuse starts once it leaves your hand, so the blast comes a few seconds later. The blast deals heavy damage across a wide area, and the damage falls off the farther you stand from it.
The Heavy Flamethrower is bought at the Bio-lab, and the Great Hunts campaigns are the route to it. A burst of fire sets creatures alight and ignites trees, shrubs and wooden building pieces, so it works well against groups. The fire can also spread to your own structures and to you, so keep that in mind.
The Single Barrel Launcher is the launcher in this group, and it's an early Tier 2 craft. That means launchers aren't only a late-game option.
Which Icarus Weapons Matter Most
Knives come first, since you'll use them for skinning and close fights almost every time you head out. Bows come next, because hunting from a distance is the job they do best. Spears matter most early, when they give you reach before you have better gear.
Javelins, grenades, flamethrowers, launchers and firearms are situational. Reach for them when you're facing a crowd, a boss or something a bow can't handle.
Weapon Durability in Icarus
Every weapon wears down with use, so it's worth keeping an eye on durability. Knives lose durability with each hit, and skinning costs even more than a hit, so a busy hunt can wear one down fast. Firearms have a talent that slows wear, and workshop weapons need their own Workshop Repair Kit.
FAQ
How do you get the Javelin Launcher in Icarus?
You buy it at the Bio-lab, and it's a legendary weapon tied to the Great Hunts campaigns. Its four attachment slots are filled with Legendary Biomass from world bosses, and you install them at the Bio-lab while in orbit. Once an attachment is installed, it can't be removed, so think before you commit.
What is the CHAC Boomstick in Icarus?
It's a 12-gauge shotgun from the Orbital Workshop, part of the CHAC family. You need to unlock the CHAC Pistol first, and you buy its shells in boxes from the same workshop. It's built to hit hard, which makes it useful against swarms.
What weapon should you make first in Icarus?
A good first weapon is the wood bow. You can craft it right away from your character with no bench, using plant fiber and sticks. Once you have a bench, the longbow is the next step up.
