Armor sets are the outfits you craft or buy in Icarus to keep your prospector alive out in the wild. Each set guards against a different threat, whether that's freezing cold, scorching heat, radiation, or wildlife that's quick to attack. Knowing how the tiers work and what each set does best will save you a lot of trial and error.

What Armor Sets Do in Icarus
Armor is your first line of defense against the planet. A good set keeps you from freezing or overheating, protects you from radiation in dangerous zones, and softens hits from creatures and falls. Without it, the environment and wildlife will wear you down fast, so it's worth planning your armor early.
Each set mixes a few numbers. Physical protection cuts damage from hits, cold and heat resistance handle temperature, and exposure resistance covers harsh air and weather. Every set also has a perceived threat number, which controls how much attention wildlife pays you. That last one is why choosing armor often comes down to being tough or being hard to spot.
Armor Tiers and Crafting Requirements
Armor is split into five tiers, and higher tiers generally bring stronger protection. They also ask more of you, with a higher character level and a specific bench for crafting. Tier 1 is made from the Character Crafting menu, Tier 2 needs a Textiles Bench, Tier 3 needs an Advanced Textiles Bench, and Tiers 4 and 5 need an Electric Textiles Bench. Since the bench is often the real gate, it pays to unlock the next one before you need it.
Crafting takes more than a bench and a level. Some sets also need a blueprint talent or a Tech Tree unlock before you can make them. Each set is built from one main material plus smaller secondary ones, so gathering enough for a full set takes time.
Where to Get Armor Sets
The base game covers most sets, starting with Cloth and Bone and moving up through Leather and Fur. These early ones are made from what you gather and hunt in the first part of the game, so they're the first sets you can make.
Expansions add the harder sets. Styx's Husk missions tie into Scorpion armor, which needs carapace that you can only strip from the large scorpion boss as you damage it. New Frontiers adds the Prometheus map, and several of its sets need that expansion before you can research them. Dangerous Horizons adds Elysium, a radioactive map, along with the radiation-focused sets built for it.
Great Hunts campaigns also reward armor. Finishing the Rimetusk campaign on Prometheus earns you the Rimetusk and Arctic Survival sets. Workshop armor works differently: you buy it after researching Orbital Tech, and it has no tier or level.
How Set Bonuses Work
Some sets reward you for wearing the whole outfit. A full set is five pieces: head, chest, arms, legs and feet. Arctic is the clearest example, since wearing all five makes you faster in arctic zones, lowers the attention wildlife pays you there, and adds extra exposure protection. Brown Bear works the same way, adding attack speed and melee resistance when all five pieces are on.
Pieces still help on their own, though. Each one brings its own protection, so a mixed outfit still keeps you safe, and you only miss out on the bonus. Full-set bonuses differ from set to set, so check what a set's full bonus does before you commit to all five pieces.
Which Armor Sets Matter Most
The right set depends on where you're headed, so start with the climate you'll spend the most time in. Cold places call for Arctic gear, and the deep arctic sets are the ones to aim for once you can craft them. For desert heat, Wayfarer was made for warm desert climates, though it needs Platinum Weave to craft. For fire and lava, obsidian sets are the answer.
If you want one sturdy set for tough fights, Composite is a strong choice that also speeds up health and stamina regeneration, while Bastion and Stabilization sit at the top for raw physical protection.
FAQ
Which armor helps you avoid wildlife in Icarus?
Ghillie and Hunter both cut perceived threat by 50%, and ST-700 cuts it by 35%. Hunter gives little protection, so it suits sneaking around more than fighting. Scorpion goes the other way with a 45% increase, so it's a poor pick when you want to stay unnoticed.
Does armor wear out, and can you upgrade it?
Yes, armor wears down over time, so it needs repairs. Workshop armor is repaired at the Machining Bench and Fabricator. For upgrades, Tier 1 to 4 armor takes Armor Attachment Packs at an Alteration Bench or Advanced Alteration Bench, but Workshop armor has no alteration slot.
Which armor protects against radiation?
Hazmat armor is the dedicated radiation set, with radiation resistance on every piece, and it also helps you resist Cave Sickness. Stabilization armor from the Workshop resists radiation too and adds heavy physical protection, which makes it the better pick when radiation zones also mean tough fights.
