All 107 Creatures and Where to Find Them in Icarus

Updated on November 1, 2026 (3 days ago)

Icarus is a survival game where you play as a prospector on a harsh planet, and the animals you meet are a big part of the challenge. Some creatures are native to the planet, while others were brought from Earth during terraforming. They can be threats, a source of meat and leather, mounts that speed up travel, or pets that fight at your side, and the bosses are the toughest of all. Knowing which ones run, which ones fight back and which ones hunt in packs is the first step to surviving a trip outside.

Passive, Neutral and Aggressive Creatures

Most creatures in Icarus fall into one of three behavior types, and knowing the type tells you what to expect when you get close. Passive creatures are the calm ones. Most animals brought over from Earth sense danger and run rather than fight, and antelope are a good example, since they spook easily, move fast and live in family groups of three or more that blend into the desert.

Neutral creatures leave you alone until you push them. Wolves are the clearest case. They usually won't attack unless you walk right up to them, and if you keep a good distance they soon lose interest. The catch is that wolves hunt in packs, so one wolf you can see usually means more are close by, and if you hit one without killing it, the rest will turn on you.

Aggressive creatures are the ones to plan around. They come after you, and the polar bear is the classic example, since it is solitary, hits hard and charges. Predators are the main threat to prospectors, so treat them as a fight to prepare for rather than something to walk past. Animals also keep their own routines, heading to water when thirsty, looking for food when hungry and reacting to the weather.

Stealth: How to Stay Unseen

Stealth is the simplest way to deal with wildlife, because it keeps an animal from noticing you at all. Crouching turns it on, and a detection indicator in the middle of the screen shows whether nearby creatures have spotted you. Moving makes noise, so a sound meter in the lower left corner shows how quiet you are as you go.

Stealth also pays off when you do decide to fight. While you are hidden, your ranged and melee damage goes up a lot, often enough to kill an animal in one hit. Some talents raise your stealth, and Ghillie Armor gives it a large boost.

Difficulty plays a part as well. On missions, the setting changes how sharply creatures notice you, and harder settings make them quicker to spot you.

Icarus Bosses: World Bosses and Mission Bosses

Bosses are the toughest creatures in Icarus, and they come in two kinds. World bosses roam the map and can turn up far from where you would expect, sometimes outside the region they are known for. The Sandworm was the first world boss added, and it moves through the deserts of Olympus, Styx and Elysium, and any mission set in the desert can be interrupted by it. The giant Scorpion came later and is not limited to the desert.

Mission bosses are tied to a specific job. The Black Wolf, often searched as the Alpha Wolf, lives on Olympus and Styx and is linked to the LUPINE extermination mission. It stays close to its den, retreats to heal when hurt, and its bleeding wounds grow worse while you are moving.

Bosses are worth the effort, since some drop materials for new blueprints, like the Black Wolf does, and the giant Scorpion's carapace is used to craft armor. Go in with proper weapons and gear, and don't rush in unprepared.

How to Tame Wild Animals in Icarus

Taming starts with a snare trap. Wolves, snow wolves, wild boars, hyenas and kiwi can be caught this way when you set the trap in the right biome and use the bait that matches the animal. Stay close while it works, because the animal despawns if you wander too far, and keep hostile creatures away while you feed it carcasses. Once the taming finishes, the animal is yours, but its level drops back to one, so it has to grow again.

Mounts are a different process. You tame them as juveniles, and since young ones are often found with their parents, you may have to deal with the adult first. Set up an Animal Bed and a Food Trough, keep the young animal dry and at a comfortable temperature, and once its needs are met, the taming bar starts to fill. Once it is full, the juvenile grows into an adult you can claim.

Mounts and Pets in Icarus: What They Do

Mounts are for getting around. Riding one greatly increases how far you can cover overland, and each type has its own strengths, such as speed, carrying capacity or the slinker's long leaps. Adults respond to commands like follow, wander, stay and lie down, and they can wear saddles, packs or carts.

Pets fight alongside you. They follow you, attack wildlife that threatens you and raise your damage output, and some also give passive bonuses such as lower oxygen use or faster health regeneration. They can't be ridden.

You control them with two sets of commands. Follow or Wander sets how they move, while Passive, Defensive or Aggressive sets their fighting stance. Defensive protects both you and the pet, and Aggressive goes after anything that threatens you.

Pets need food and water, which you can give them from troughs or by hand. Neglect slows them down and weakens their recovery, though they can't die from hunger or thirst. They can reach level 25 and earn talents, and wolves, snow wolves, boars, hyenas, dogs and cats each have their own talent trees.

Workshop Animals in Icarus

Workshop animals are the cattle, chickens, sheep, pigs, dogs, cats and horses that you get from the Workshop rather than catching in the wild. You research and craft each one, and then it is delivered to the surface through the Orbital Exchange Interface. Once it arrives, it needs the same food and water care as any other pet.

Hunting Creatures for Meat, Leather and Bone

Killing an animal is only the start. Carcasses yield raw meat, fur, leather and bone, and skinning them with a knife gets you most of it. A Taxidermy Knife also yields a vestige, which you use to craft a trophy at a Trophy Bench, and skeletons can be broken down with a knife or axe for extra bone.

Bigger animals can be too heavy to carry whole, so you process them at a skinning bench. Aim for the head on most animals, since it is the critical spot, and learn each animal's weak points, because the right attack can change a fight.

Filling Your Bestiary

The Bestiary tracks your progress on every creature. You earn points by killing, skinning and scanning an animal with a B.E.A.S.T., and taming it adds more, while killing a boss is worth the most. Progress unlocks bonuses against that animal, such as more damage to it and better resistance to its attacks, so fill the entries you hunt most.

FAQ

Q.

Can I fight a wolf pack on my own?

Wolves are weak on their own, so the pack is what makes them dangerous. Melee is a poor choice, because wolves swarm you and back away, which makes your hits harder to land. Attacking from range while you are hidden is the safer approach, since one hidden shot can be enough to drop a wolf.

Q.

Can wild animals attack my mounts and pets?

Yes. Tamed mounts can still be attacked by wildlife, so keep them out of fights they can't win. Juvenile mounts don't fight back at all, which is why a safe enclosure or a Creature Deterrent matters while they grow up.
