Hunt: Showdown 1896 is a monster-hunting shooter set in the 1890s, where you chase bounties and go up against other hunters. Traits are its perks, small upgrades that change how your hunter fights, moves, heals and loots. The traits you pick shape how each match goes for you, so knowing how they're earned and used up makes building a hunter that suits your style a lot easier.

What Traits Are and How They Work in Hunt: Showdown 1896
Traits fall into four groups: Offensive, Defensive, Movement and Supportive. Offensive traits focus on weapons and fighting, Defensive traits cut the damage you take, Movement traits help you get around the map, and Supportive traits cover things like looting, tools, reviving and teamwork. Each hunter carries its own set of traits.
Several traits are tied to specific weapons, and they only pay off when you're carrying one of them. A trait built for lever-action weapons won't do much for a crossbow, for example, so your setup should follow what you carry. No single build works for every hunter, which is why it helps to match your traits to your weapons and how you like to play.
How to Get Traits With Upgrade Points and Trait Spurs
Most regular traits are bought from the Trait menu with Upgrade Points, and each one opens up once your Bloodline rank is high enough. Each hunter has its own supply of points, and you earn more by playing, so every purchase is a trade-off against the next one.
The other source is Trait Spurs, which you find during a mission. Interacting with one gives you its trait right away. Scarce traits can't be bought at all, so a spur is the only way to get them. Some traits only show up during limited-time events and leave when those events end.
Burn, Scarce and Conditional Traits Explained
Burn traits give their effect once and are then used up, so they leave your hunter after that single use. They're worth saving for the moment they'll matter most. Scarce traits are the rarer kind, and they stay on your hunter after you use them.
A few traits only switch on under certain conditions. Catalyst is a Scarce trait that unlocks extra effects on several others, and some traits get a bonus only when you play solo, without a team.
Which Traits Are Best in Hunt: Showdown 1896
Revive and healing traits come out on top most often. Doctor, Necromancer and Resilience come up again and again, since they help you and your team stay in the fight after going down.
Movement traits come next for a lot of players. Greyhound is a common pick because it lets you sprint at full speed for longer, which helps you rotate across the map and escape.
Use these as a starting point rather than a rule. Choose your revive and healing traits first, add movement that fits how you move, then fill the remaining picks around your main weapon.
FAQ
Where do you find Trait Spurs?
Trait Spurs turn up around the map during a mission, so it pays to check rooms and corners as you move. Wild targets are worth hunting for traits too: Rotjaw drops a Scarce trait and Hellborn drops a Burn trait when killed.
What does Catalyst actually change?
Catalyst adds a bonus to seven other traits when you carry both. For example, Vigilant's highlight range doubles, Kiteskin makes falls non-lethal, Lightfoot stops you from breaking branches, and Vulture also gives you some ammo from looting downed hunters.
Which traits get a bonus when you play solo?
Necromancer, Magpie, Serpent and Conduit have extra effects that only apply when you play alone, such as Necromancer's single self-revive. In a group they still do their normal job, just without those solo bonuses.
