All 7 Bosses and Their Weaknesses in Hunt: Showdown 1896

Updated on November 1, 2026 (3 days ago)

Hunt: Showdown 1896 is a shooter where teams of hunters track corrupted monsters for bounty rewards. The bosses are the monsters that carry those bounties, and most must be killed and then banished before the reward is yours, so knowing how each one is found and fought makes a big difference.

Wild Targets

2 items

Rotjaw

A water-dwelling Wild Target that hides below the surface and drains stamina with Arc Bloom.

Weaknesses
Blunt damage and poison; melee is effective when she surfaces, especially at the exposed mouth.
Resistances
Bullet damage is about half its usual value. Deep water can make many consumables ineffective, and fire damage does not continue after a Fire Bomb's initial explosion.
Banishment
Banishes instantly when she dies.
Bounty-token Reward
One Bounty Token and one Scarce Trait when killed.

Hellborn

A roaming Wild Target that tracks Hunters with long-range fireballs and gives no banish timer.

What Bosses Are in Hunt: Showdown 1896

Bosses come in two kinds. Boss targets are the main prize, and each one lives in a Boss Lair, the building at the heart of a compound. A match has one or two of them, and a match with only one can include a wild target too. Wild targets roam the open world and don't have a lair.

The five boss targets are Assassin, Bloodskin, Butcher, Scrapbeak and Spider. The two wild targets are Hellborn and Rotjaw. Bloodskin joined the roster in Update 2.9, while Butcher and Spider have been in the game since its early days.

Bounty tokens are what turns a kill into a payout, and you have to carry them to an extraction point to cash them in.

How to Find Bosses With Dark Sight and Clues

Boss targets don't appear on the map from the start. Each one has three clues, which you can see in Dark Sight, a special view that makes them glow blue. Monsters often guard them. Investigating a clue rules out parts of the map where the boss can't be, so each one you check narrows the search.

After the third clue, the boss's lair shows on your map, but only for your team. Rival teams can still stumble onto a boss earlier, so expect company even before you have all three.

Wild targets use their own methods. Hellborn is found by sound: use Dark Sight and listen for its roar, which points you in its direction. Rotjaw lives in the water, so you follow the traces she leaves at the water's edge, and she goes after anyone who gets too close.

How Boss Fights Work and What Makes Them Hard

Once you reach a boss target, it fights from inside its lair and can't leave it. As the fight goes on, bosses enter a frenzy at 75, 50 and 25 percent health. In frenzy they can hit harder, move faster or take less damage, so a plan that worked earlier can stop working.

Because the boss stays put, you can step out to heal or reload, then come back. Backing off when a frenzy starts is usually the safer call.

Other teams are often the bigger danger. Gunfire carries across the map and draws rival hunters toward the fight, so keep an ear out and deal with an incoming team before you finish the boss.

How to Banish a Boss and Earn Bounty Tokens

Killing a boss target isn't the end of the job. Once it dies, a hunter has to banish it, which takes a few minutes. The banish reveals the boss's location to every team, and rival teams often wait nearby for this moment, hoping to wipe your team and take the banish over. Plan your defense before you start, because you'll be tied to one spot for the full banish.

Once the banish is done, the boss drops two bounty tokens. A hunter can't carry both tokens from the same boss, so in a trio one player goes without. Anyone holding a token shows up on the map for every team, which makes the carrier an easy target.

Wild targets skip banishing. They count as banished the moment they die, and they drop one token right away.

Which Bosses Matter Most and What Damage Works Against Them

Each boss takes damage differently, and fire and poison are the two to think about first. Butcher shrugs off fire, but poison works well against it. Spider is the reverse, since it resists poison and fire is its weak point. Assassin is weak to poison as well.

Butcher is big and slower than the others, but its attacks leave fire pools that can set you alight. Spider is the quickest of the group. It climbs walls and ceilings, pounces, and spits poison.

Assassin fights as a swarm of bugs and causes bleeding. In frenzy it sends out decoy clones to confuse you. Scrapbeak matters beyond its own fight, since its lair has no supplies around it, so bring what you need. It also drops items each time it enters frenzy.

Butcher is the most straightforward to learn, since its attacks are easier to read, though they hit hard. Spider and Assassin are harder to control because they move fast. Rotjaw's fights happen in water, where many consumables lose their punch, and Hellborn throws fireballs from range in the open, where rival teams often join in.

FAQ

Q.

What is Bloodskin in Hunt: Showdown 1896?

Bloodskin changes form partway through the fight. It starts as a slow, heavily armored brute whose weak spots only open up once you break its armor, then switches to a faster form for the rest of the fight.

Q.

What's the best damage type against Butcher?

Poison and rending damage work best, while fire does nothing to it. Leave incendiary rounds and Dragon Breath shells behind when you know you're hunting the Butcher.

Q.

Do bosses drop anything besides bounty tokens?

Some do, in the form of traits. A trait is a passive bonus for your hunter. Hellborn drops a Burn trait, Rotjaw drops a Scarce trait, and Bloodskin drops the Siphon Burn trait when it dies.

Q.

Can you banish a boss from a distance?

Yes, if you have the Serpent trait. It lets you banish from range, and it also lets you investigate clues and pick up bounty tokens from a distance.
