Ammo types in Gray Zone Warfare are the different rounds you load into your guns, grouped by caliber. They include 9x19mm and .45 ACP pistol rounds, 5.45x39mm, 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm and 7.62x51mm rifle rounds, and 12 gauge shotgun shells. Each round's design, mostly its tip and core, decides how well it punches through armor and how much damage it does once it gets there. Once you understand that trade-off, picking the right ammo before a fight gets much easier.

How Calibers and Ammo Types Fit Together
A caliber is the size of the cartridge a gun is built to fire, so a rifle chambered for 5.56x45mm only takes 5.56x45mm rounds. Each caliber fits a group of guns: 9x19mm and .45 ACP for pistols and submachine guns, 5.56x45mm for M4-style rifles, 5.45x39mm and 7.62x39mm for AK-style and SKS rifles, 7.62x51mm for heavier battle and sniper rifles, and 12 gauge for shotguns. Inside each caliber you'll find several rounds. They all fit the same gun, but each has its own bullet design, which is why one caliber can hold a basic round for soft targets and another built for armor.
Penetration vs. Damage: The Trade-Off Behind Every Round
Most of the differences between rounds come down to one trade-off. Penetration is how well a bullet gets through armor, and damage is what it does to a body once it gets there. Soft point and hollow point rounds open up when they hit, which dumps their energy into the target and causes bigger wounds than FMJ and AP rounds, but that same opening is what stops them at armor. Armor-piercing rounds, with steel, tungsten or sharpened cores, keep their shape and punch through, often passing through a body with less damage.
The standard full metal jacket round, usually called FMJ, sits in the middle and is the baseline most other rounds are compared against. No round gets full marks on both penetration and damage, so the real question is which one fits the enemy in front of you.
Matching Ammo to Enemy Armor
Armor is the main reason ammo choice matters. Soft points are a poor choice against level III armor, while armor-piercing rounds spend their power getting through plates and then do less damage to an enemy with no armor on. High-damage rounds also feel weak against a well-armored target, so matching the round to the target matters more than picking the strongest one.
Armor comes in levels, and a round that handles one level can still fail against a higher one. As a simple rule, use armor-piercing rounds for geared enemies, expanding rounds for unarmored ones, and FMJ when you don't know what you're about to meet.
The Ammo Types That Matter Most
Armor penetration varies a lot inside each caliber, and a few rounds sit at the top. In 5.56x45mm, the M995 armor-piercing round comes out on top, followed by the M855A1 and its tracer version, then the M855. In 5.45x39mm, the BP (7N22) and BS (7N24) rounds are the strongest against armor, with BT and PP next. In 7.62x39mm, BP (7N23) leads and PS comes after it. In 7.62x51mm, the M61 AP round has the most penetration of its caliber.
If armor is the problem, load the top round for your caliber: M995 for 5.56x45mm, BP or BS for 5.45x39mm, BP for 7.62x39mm, and M61 AP for 7.62x51mm. Rounds lower on each list are a step behind against armor, so they're the second choice.
Where to Find Ammo and How to Keep Enough
Enemies you fight are one of the main ways to get ammo, so it helps to build your loadout around rounds you can pick up from them. That way, the fights you win also keep you restocked. Armor-piercing rounds are best saved for fights where you expect armored enemies, while basic rounds cover the rest.
Subsonic and Tracer Rounds
Subsonic rounds travel slower than the speed of sound, which keeps the sharp crack down when you fire a suppressed gun. They're built for quiet rather than power or accuracy, and the 5.45x39mm US round is a good example, with only middling armor penetration.
Tracer rounds leave a glowing trail so you can follow where they go, but they don't add penetration or damage. A tracer version matches its plain counterpart, such as BT and PP in 5.45x39mm, so the only real difference is the trail.
12 Gauge: Buckshot or Slugs
Shotgun shells come in two main kinds. Buckshot fires a cluster of pellets, and slugs fire one heavy projectile. When armor is involved, the specific load matters more than the kind.
The SST sabot slug has the best armor penetration of any shotgun shell, and FC 00 buckshot comes next. Plain 00 buckshot and plain slugs barely get through any armor, so they belong with unarmored enemies, where buckshot still hits hard at close range. If you're going up against armored enemies, load the SST sabot slug. If you want buckshot instead, FC 00 is the better choice.
FAQ
Which pistol ammo gets through helmets and vests in Gray Zone Warfare?
The .45 ACP armor-piercing round and the 9x19mm Xtreme Penetrator +P both get through Class IIIA protection, and the 9x19mm Libra Snail beats most armor. Those are the pistol rounds to carry when you expect armored enemies.
What ammo should I use early in Gray Zone Warfare?
For the M4 early on, M193 has armor penetration that matches standard FMJ, so it's a safe all-round pick while the stronger armor-piercing rounds are still locked behind higher vendor ranks.
