Gray Zone Warfare takes place on Lamang, a fictional island where rival private military companies are fighting after a mysterious event. You play as a hired operator working for one of three of these companies, and you choose which one when you create your character. You also pick a mode: Warfare, where rival players are in the mix, or Joint Operations, where only AI enemies fight you.
Every raid starts at your base, where you check your locker and pick up tasks from vendors. To leave, you pick a landing spot on the map and a helicopter flies you there. Once on the ground, you complete tasks, scavenge weapons and supplies, and fight enemies. The hard part is getting out, because you have to call a helicopter back to a landing zone, and its noise can draw enemies who know you're leaving.
What you bring out is what moves you forward. Selling loot at base brings in money, which buys the gear you need for the next raid. Completing tasks for a vendor raises your reputation with them, which opens new tasks and better gear. Higher vendor ranks also unlock a hideout, where you craft goods to sell or smuggle, and the longer goal is uncovering the truth behind the event that started the fighting.

Weapons
Gray Zone Warfare's weapons span assault rifles, battle rifles, rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, and pistols, and each type is built for a different range. Rogue Ops adds bullpup rifles and semi-automatic shotguns, along with new guns such as the Steyr AUG, G36, UMP, and Glock 18C. Calibers, ammo, and armor all shape how a gun performs, while attachments change how it aims and handles.
Ammo
Ammo types are the different rounds used in Gray Zone Warfare's guns, grouped by caliber from 9x19mm and .45 ACP pistol rounds to 5.45x39mm, 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm and 7.62x51mm rifle rounds, plus 12 gauge shotgun shells. Each round trades armor penetration against damage to the body, so no single round is best in every fight. Armor-piercing rounds are mainly for armored enemies, while expanding rounds handle unarmored targets best.
Vendors
Vendors are the traders in Gray Zone Warfare who buy and sell gear and hand out tasks. The lineup is Handshake, Gunny, Lab Rat, Artisan, Turncoat, Banshee, and Vulture, the black-market dealer. Each one carries its own mix of gear, and your reputation with each decides which tasks and items you can reach.
Gray Zone Warfare gameplay tips
- Pick your faction with your friends. Squads can only include players from the same faction, so agree on one before you log in. The three choices are Lamang Recovery Initiative, Mithras Security Systems and Crimson Shield International. Each character is locked to one faction and one mode, and you can't have two characters with the same faction and mode at once.
- Start in Joint Operations. It runs on the same map and systems as Warfare, so everything you learn carries over. Since nobody is hunting your loot, you can focus on the helicopter pickups and the layout of the map.
- Put your best gear in your locker between raids. Items in your locker never leave the base, so a bad raid can't take them with it.
- Keep your most valuable small items in the SafeLock. Items inside the box aren't lost if you die. The box is small, so save it for the items you'd hate to lose most.
