In Going Medieval, you run a settlement, and your settlers depend on food, drink, cloth, wood and sticks to get by. Crops, berry bushes and trees are the plants that supply those things. Crop fields give food, drink and cloth, while bushes and trees add fruit, wood and sticks. Knowing how each kind is planted, harvested and protected from cold and blight keeps your settlement supplied.

How Crops, Bushes and Trees Work
Crops are the plants you grow in marked fields, and most of them give a single harvest before the ground has to be sown again. Berry bushes and fruit trees work differently. Each one keeps producing over several harvests, so it gives you a steady supply without being replanted.
Getting Seeds and Saplings
You need seeds to sow a crop field and saplings to plant a tree, so getting them is the first step. Seeds come from wild plants, traders or your own crops. Barley and redcurrant are sown with their own produce, so you can plant them straight from a harvest. A crop field only appears in the field menu once its seed is somewhere on the map, so keep some in stock.
Trees drop saplings whenever they're cut, unless they're dead, so chopping a healthy tree gives you one to plant somewhere else. Apple saplings can't be found in the wild, so for those you buy from merchants or settlements.
Planting, Harvesting and Chopping
Mark a field with the zone menu, then choose the crop and drag out the area. Settlers only harvest when someone has been assigned the farming job, so set that up before you expect food to come in. Fruit trees can only go on soil, grass or marshy ground, so check the land before you plant one.
You can pick the phase a crop is harvested in, and that option shows up for tree crops such as apple trees, which have both a cutting phase and a harvesting phase. Changing a field to a different crop cuts the old plants down so the new ones can be sown. You can also set a priority for each crop field, the same way you do with stockpiles, and a Don't Sow setting lets the current crop finish without any new sowing.
Plants that are damaged give less when they're harvested or cut, in proportion to the health they have left. A settler with low Botany skill can ruin a harvest altogether, and plants under a roof die, so keep fields in the open.
Which Crops and Trees Matter Most
Cabbage ripens faster than any other crop, which makes it the quickest food to get started with. Barley is one of the most useful crops, since it goes into ale, beer and bread, though it takes much longer to ripen than cabbage. Flax is the only way to get linen without taking apart clothing you already have, so it matters whenever cloth runs low.
Carrots keep well, so they're good for building a winter food supply, while beets only go into food. Herbs go into cooking and medicine. Redcurrant bushes give berries for wine and meals, and they also grow wild on the map.
Apple trees are a steady source of fruit, and apples alone can make a meal, such as apple pie.
Where Wood and Sticks Come From
Trees and berry bushes give sticks when they're chopped or harvested. Sticks fuel torches and braziers, but you'll need more of them than coal or wood. Chopping a tree also gives wood and saplings, and trees without fruit generally give more wood and sticks than fruit trees.
Birch, field maple, oak and Scots pine grow naturally on the map, so you can chop them without planting first. Fruit trees such as apple and walnut are planted from saplings, and they give fruit as well as wood and sticks.
Cold Weather and Crop Blight
Crops stop growing when temperatures drop, so cold slows your food supply. Frost also damages plants, and damaged plants give fewer resources at harvest. Barley has a long growth period, which makes it vulnerable to a spring cold snap.
Blight is the bigger risk for fields. It appears in summer and autumn, strikes random patches of a field, and can only affect flax, barley, cabbage, carrots and beets. It spreads to nearby crops and destroys them if it's left alone, so cut out affected plants quickly. Field size and shape also play a big role in controlling it, so think about layout as well as cutting.
FAQ
Can you farm mushrooms in Going Medieval?
No. Settlers can't grow mushrooms, so you gather them where they grow on the map instead of setting aside a field.
How do I get more seeds from cabbage in Going Medieval?
Cabbage, carrots and beets drop a seed when they ripen, but they give far more when they're left to flower and go to seed. Letting a few fields finish that stage, rather than harvesting every plant, builds up a seed supply for the next sowing.
Why are my apple trees stunted?
Trees need enough sunlight. A tree that doesn't get enough sun grows stunted and gives much less than normal, so leave room between trees and keep them out of shade.
