Farming Simulator 25 is a game about running a working farm, from growing crops and raising animals to selling what you produce. Harvesters are the machines that do the cutting, lifting and chopping at harvest time. Each one is built for a certain crop or job, so a grain combine and a forestry machine work very differently. Knowing what each type does, what it needs to run, and how to get one makes it much easier to pick the right harvester for your fields.

What Harvesters Do in Farming Simulator 25
Some harvesters lift or cut a crop out of the field, some chop forage into chaff, and forestry machines turn trees into logs. Each one is designed around a particular kind of work, so no single machine handles everything.
The machines are grouped by what they handle: grain, forage, root crops, vegetables, special crops and forestry. Grain harvesters, often called combines, cut grain crops and carry them in a tank. Root crop machines work on crops like sugar beets and potatoes, vegetable machines handle carrots, spinach, green beans and peas, and special crop machines cover rice, cotton, sugarcane, grapes and olives.
How Harvesters Work in the Field
Combines and forage harvesters need the right header attached before they can work. The header decides which crops the machine can handle and how wide a strip it cuts.
A combine keeps the grain in its own tank while it works. When that tank is full, you unload into a trailer and take the grain to a selling point, a factory, or storage to sell later.
Forage harvesters work differently because they have no crop tank at all. They chop the crop as they go and fill a trailer driving alongside, so you need a tractor and trailer working with them. Vegetable and sugarcane machines unload in their own ways too. Some vegetable harvesters drop the harvest into boxes, others use a tank or a trailer, and sugarcane harvesters fill a trailer directly.
Forage Harvesters, Chaff and Silage
Forage harvesters chop crops into chaff, which is the material you use to make silage. Silage is feed for cows, so a forage harvester is the first step in feeding your herd. If you raise cattle, this is one of the machines that matters most.
To turn chaff into silage, you dump it into a bunker silo, which is a large pile on the ground, and drive over it to pack it down. Then you cover it and wait for the fermentation to finish.
How to Buy or Lease a Harvester
Harvesters are sold at the dealership, and you can either buy one outright or lease it. Leasing lets you use a machine without paying its full price up front.
Headers can be bought separately, while specialty machines generally come with their crop equipment attached. Before you buy, look at what's included and check the crop icons shown for the machine. Those icons are the best check for each model, and they show which crops a combine or forage harvester can handle once its header is on.
How to Choose the Right Harvester
Four things matter most when you compare harvesters: the crops they handle, their cost and power, their working width, and how much they hold. Crop compatibility comes first, because a machine that can't handle your crop won't do you any good.
Power is labeled differently depending on the machine. Trailed machines show the power a tractor needs to pull them, while self-propelled machines show their own engine power. Make sure your tractor is strong enough before you buy a trailed machine.
Working width depends on the header for combines and forage harvesters, so there's no single fixed number for those. Capacity is the tank or bunker size on most machines, while cotton harvesters measure it by bale capacity because they pack the crop into bales.
The group that matters most depends on what you grow and raise. If you grow grain, the combines are the machines to focus on. If you keep cows, forage harvesters matter because they start the silage. Root crop, vegetable and special crop machines are worth a look when you grow those specific crops, since each one works with only certain crops.
Bigger machines usually have bigger tanks, cost more, and need more power to run. A bigger tank means you unload less often, so it's worth weighing that against the price.
Forestry Harvesters and Logs
Forestry harvesters fell trees, strip off the branches and cut the trunk into logs. Running a full forestry operation takes expensive machines, so you can lease them or start with forestry jobs through contracts.
Forestry harvesters suit conifers, such as pines, which have small branches and long, straight trunks. That makes them ideal for timber. Deciduous trees, such as poplars, are more crooked with many thick branches, so they're mainly used for wood chips.
Logs need to be de-branched and cut before you can sell them. Their price depends on length and straightness, so small, bent pieces sell for less. You can run those through a wood chipper to make wood chips for the sawmill instead.
FAQ
When should you harvest crops in Farming Simulator 25?
Check the crop calendar for the right time to harvest each crop. You can see a crop's growth stage in the field info box when you stand near it, or on the map.
Which crops can a forage harvester turn into chaff?
Chaff can be made from corn, wheat, barley, oats, canola, sorghum, soybeans and sunflowers.
Why is the price I pay different from the price shown for a harvester?
The price shown is the base shop price, before any configuration changes, sales, or used-sale discounts. Those can all change what you actually pay.
Can a forestry harvester cut every tree?
No. Deciduous trees are cut by hand with a chainsaw, not with a harvester. Among conifers, cypress and stone pine are the exceptions, so a forestry harvester can't be used on them.
