Memories are collectible items in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow that you earn by defeating monsters. Each one is inspired by a monster, vocation or character from the series, and equipping it on a character adds stat boosts and effects such as extra damage, a higher critical hit rate or better resistance to a status ailment. They're one of the main ways to make your party stronger, so it pays to understand how they work early on.

How Memories Work in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow
Once you have a Memory, you equip it on one of your characters before a run. Its stats and effects then apply in battle, adding things like physical or elemental damage, better resistance to a status ailment, or a higher chance to land a critical hit. Each one also adds to base stats such as HP, attack and defense, so the right set can change how a character plays.
Every Memory has a cost, and the stronger ones take more to equip, so you'll need to decide which ones are worth a spot.
How to Get Memories in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow
Most Memories drop from monsters in story stages. Replaying stages you've already cleared gives you more tries at the ones you're missing, though drops aren't guaranteed, so it can take several runs.
Shrines are another source, and each one holds a tough boss that can give you a Memory when defeated. Limited events add more, since Strong Enemy matches, defense battles and collaborations with earlier Dragon Quest games such as Dragon Quest I, VI and IV all hand out Memories. Event Memories can only be earned while their event is running, and some only come back when that event does.
Vocation Memories, named after the classes in the game, can be traded for medals earned in Super Monster Rush. The Rare and Super Rare labels on stages show how often a monster appears, not how strong its Memory is.
Every Memory you register in the Memory Album gives a small, permanent stat bonus. Those bonuses add up as your collection grows, so it's worth registering as you go.
How to Choose Memories by Effect
Memories boost damage in a few different ways, so check what each one actually does before you equip it. Some boost one element, such as Fire, Ice, Wind, Lightning, Earth, Light or Dark. Others boost physical or spell damage, raise damage against one enemy family such as Machine, Demon, Dragon or Material, or add to critical hit rate or a resistance.
Shrine Memories such as Flamethrower, Glacial Golem and Automaton work a little differently, since they start you off with a skill like Fire Pebble, Ice Arrow or Wind Ball at the start of a stage.
The best pick depends on two things: your weapon's element and the enemies in the stage. A fire Memory does little for a weapon that deals ice damage, and one that boosts damage to Dragon enemies won't help much in a stage full of Machines. So match your Memories to your weapon's element and to the enemies you'll face.
How to Rank Up Memories
Getting another copy of a Memory you already own lets you rank it up, and each rank makes its stats and effects stronger. It pays to put your duplicates into the few Memories that support your build, rather than spreading them across every promising one.
Memory Colors and Extra Memory Slots
Memories come in five colors: red, blue, yellow, green and purple. Vocation tree panels can add extra Memory slots, so it's worth checking them as you go.
What Memoria Skills Are
Memoria Skills are tied to Character Memories, such as the ones from the Dragon Quest IV heroes. A skill activates when a Character Memory reaches Rank S and sits in a star-marked slot that matches its color. Since Rank S is required, those are the Memories worth spending your duplicates on.
More Memoria Skills are being added through an update during the Dragon Quest IV event, so there will be more to use while that event runs.
FAQ
What's the difference between Memories and blessings?
Blessings are random effects that stages hand out during a run through a Rift, and they reshuffle every stage. Memories are equipped on your characters before a run, and their stats and effects apply in battle. One is what the run gives you, and the other is what you bring into it.
Should I rank up Memories or upgrade my weapon first?
Make sure your main weapon is performing well before you put heavy investment into Memories. After that, fill any open slots with useful Memories, even modest ones, and then put upgrades into the few that support your core build.
