In Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, you fight through rifts, which are tears in space packed with monsters. It's a free-to-play roguelite RPG from Square Enix for iOS and Android. Each session, you push through a rift's stages until you reach the boss. You steer your hero through the crowds with an on-screen stick, and your hero attacks on its own whenever you stand still with an enemy in range, so you can focus on moving and dodging. Damage you deal fills a Coup de Grâce gauge, and when it's full, you can unleash a strong finishing attack.
Along the way, you pick up Blessings, temporary power-ups that last only for the rest of the stage. Each new stage offers a fresh random set, so every run plays a little differently. Not everything is temporary, though. Materials upgrade your equipment, monsters drop Memories that raise your stats, and your characters level up as you use them.
The long-term goal is a stronger party. You can field up to three heroes, and each one can take on a vocation, a classic Dragon Quest job class that changes how they fight and has its own tree of upgrades you unlock beyond normal leveling. The story sends you through rift after rift to restore order, with Roly, a mechanical companion, at your side. Co-op quests let up to three other players join in.

Game data
Weapons
Weapons shape how your basic attacks play out, and every one has a type, an element and its own Coup de Grâce finishing move. There are six types: swords, spears, staves, boomerangs, claws and whips. Most three-star and many two-star weapons also carry an enchantment, a passive effect such as orbiting spheres or ricochets. Weapons come in one, two and three star ratings.
Memories
Memories are collectible items you earn by defeating monsters and equip on your characters for stat boosts and effects like extra damage, a higher critical hit rate or better resistance. They come in five colors and fall into story, vocation and event groups, and event Memories can only be earned while their event is running. Copies of a Memory can be used to rank it up, and Character Memories can unlock Memoria Skills once they reach Rank S in a matching slot.
Vocations
Vocations are the classes in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, and they decide each character's role in battle, the weapons they suit and the trait they bring. The base vocations are Warrior, Mage, Priest, Thief and Martial Artist. Advanced vocations Paladin, Sage, Ranger and Battle Master each need two base vocations at level 50, and Battle Master comes from Warrior and Martial Artist. Changing a character's vocation keeps each vocation's own level, and vocation trees add permanent boosts for Nodestones and gold.
Dragon Quest Smash/Grow gameplay tips
- Commit to one Blessing line. A Blessing line is a chain of upgrades that build on each other, so sticking with one line makes each pick count more.
- Keep your hero moving and stop only to attack. Normal attacks need your hero to stand still while it finishes a combo, while many Blessings fire on their own. Moving keeps you ahead of the crowd.
- Watch the red warnings on the map. Ranged attacks show up as red lines and melee attacks as red circles, so you can step out of the way before they land.
- Grind Metal Slime battles in the Training tab with Auto-battle. Metal Slimes give EXP, and Auto-battle works best on fights you already outclass.
- Add materials in bulk when upgrading gear. The "+5" option on the upgrade screen isn't a limit, so you can add as many materials as you like in one go and avoid repeated taps.
