How Core Keeper Armor Protects You

Most armor pieces have an Armor number, and that's the part that actually keeps you alive. When an enemy hits you, your Armor lowers the damage before it reaches your health, so a higher total leaves you with more life after each hit.

Many pieces also carry stats beyond Armor. You'll see max health on most gear, Magic Barrier and mana on magic pieces, and bonuses that push a playstyle, like mining damage, ranged damage or minion damage. Because of that, the Armor number alone doesn't tell you the whole story. A piece with less protection can still be the better pick if its bonus fits the way you fight.

How Core Keeper Armor Set Bonuses Work

A set bonus turns on when you wear enough pieces from the same set. Most sets have three pieces, some have two, and a few have four or five. The number needed depends on the set, and some larger sets have a second step, so three matching pieces might give one bonus while five give a stronger one.

Mixing pieces from different sets won't turn on any set bonus, though each piece still gives its own stats. Some sets include rings and necklaces, which go in your accessory slots instead of the armor slots, and they count toward the full set. Bonuses don't always work the same way, either. Armor grows with the metals you gather. You start with wood gear, which is cheap and easy to make but only offers basic protection. Each new metal opens a new tier of armor, and the strongest sets need the rarer materials that show up later in the game.

Each metal tier is crafted at its own anvil, so you need that anvil before you can make its armor. Every piece also has an item level, and higher-level pieces come from the tougher biomes further from the Core.
