In Cassette Beasts, a monster-collecting game, you record wild beasts during battle to turn each one into a tape, and you're stranded on the island of New Wirral. Your goal is to find a way home, and the town of Harbourtown is your home base. Its residents hand out quests and hints about where to go next, while you explore the island from an overhead view.
Battles are turn-based, and most are two against two. You and a partner, a stranded islander who joins your team, each take the form of a beast. Since beasts are how you fight, you build your team by recording wild ones during battle, which turns each one into a tape you can play to transform into it later. A beast's moves come from the stickers on it, so swapping stickers changes how it fights.
Fusion lets two beasts combine into one stronger form for the length of a fight. Winning battles earns experience and materials, and since New Wirral has no money, you trade those materials with merchants for stickers, tapes and healing items. Recording certain beasts also gives you abilities, such as gliding and swimming, that you need to reach some parts of the island. The main story builds toward fights with the Archangels, strange and powerful beings that make up some of the game's toughest battles.

Archangels
Archangels are powerful bosses in Cassette Beasts that usually hide beneath New Wirral's Mer-Line stations. They fight differently from ordinary monsters, holding their AP until an unavoidable Angelic Attack goes off. You'll face them in the main story, the post-game and the Pier of the Unknown DLC.
Stickers
Stickers are the items that give each monster tape its moves, and the stickers on a tape decide what it can do in battle. You can peel a sticker off to free a slot and swap in a different one, but only outside battle. Each tape has a limited number of slots, each species can only use certain stickers, and some stickers carry attributes that boost their moves.
Collectibles
Beasts
Beasts are the creatures that fight for you in Cassette Beasts, and you collect them by recording them onto tapes. Each one has an element type, and the game has 14 types in all, including Fire, Water, Plant and Air. Beasts can be fused together for a single battle and remastered into stronger forms as they grow. Rare bootleg versions can appear with a different type and moves.
Cassette Beasts gameplay tips
- Try new sticker combinations between fights. You can add or remove stickers any time you're outside battle, so experimenting is easy. Each species can only use certain stickers, so try a few setups on the beasts you use most to see what suits your style.
- Aim for elemental weaknesses. Hitting a weakness gives your fighter 1 extra action point (AP), and every fighter gains 2 AP each round. Stronger moves cost more AP, so that one extra point can help you afford a bigger move sooner.
- Weaken a beast before you record it. The lower its HP, the better your chance of recording it, and damage-over-time effects like burn help too. Damage you take during the attempt lowers your chance, so keep yourself out of harm's way while you try.
- Hold fusion for hard fights. Your fusion meter fills as you take damage, so it builds up during rough battles. If the fused form is knocked out, both tapes that formed it break, so save fusion for battles where the extra power matters most, like Archangel fights.
- Build friendship with your partner. You need at least friendship level 1 to fuse with a partner, and each level after that makes your fusions stronger, up to a 25% boost at level 5. Fight alongside them, finish their personal quests, and rest with them at a campsite to raise it.
