In Bellwright, you build a medieval settlement and recruit villagers to work and fight for it. Armor and clothing are the pieces they wear, and each one reduces the damage a character takes in combat. The pieces fall into three groups, clothing, medium armor and heavy armor, and each group trades protection against speed and Strength. Understanding that trade is the key to deciding what to craft and who should wear it.

How Armor and Clothing Work in Bellwright
Each piece fits a body slot, such as the head, torso, hands, legs or feet. Because every slot takes its own piece, you can upgrade your outfit one part at a time instead of replacing everything at once. Each piece has an armor value, and a higher number means more damage absorbed. Pieces also wear down with use, and they come in tiers, where higher tiers protect more.
Clothing, Medium Armor and Heavy Armor Compared
The three groups are really a balance between protection, speed and Strength. Clothing is the lightest group. It protects the least, but it barely slows a character down, so it's the easiest to wear while you're getting started. Medium armor sits in the middle. It protects noticeably more than clothing, costs a small amount of speed, and asks for a modest amount of Strength.
Heavy armor is the strongest group, and it brings the biggest trade-offs. Heavy pieces protect far more, but each one slows a character, and those penalties add up across the body. A full set of top-tier plate slows a character a lot, so you have to decide whether the protection is worth the slowdown.
How Strength Decides Who Can Wear What
Strength is one of your character's core stats, and it acts as a gate. You and your villagers must meet a piece's Strength requirement before you can equip it, and heavy armor asks for the most. That makes heavy gear a question of who wears it as much as what it is. Put your strongest recruits in plate for fights, and give lighter pieces to the villagers with less Strength.
How to Get Armor and Clothing
Pieces are unlocked through the game's tech tree, so you have to research them before you can make them. After that, each one is crafted at a workstation. The Weaver Hut handles cloth gear and some caps and helms, the Tanner's Hut makes leather boots, gloves and bracers, and the Armourer makes heavy helmets and more advanced armor. Metal pieces need ingots, and cloth pieces use textiles. Higher-tier pieces also need a higher Crafting skill, so a piece can be unlocked and still out of reach until your skill catches up.
Which Armor and Clothing Matter Most
Early on, lighter pieces are the practical choice because they keep your speed up while the settlement is still growing. In the middle of the game, medium armor gives a solid balance of protection for fights and only a small slowdown. Late in the game, heavy armor matters most. On the torso, pieces such as Great Plate Armour rank among the strongest, but they carry the biggest speed penalties, so they suit your toughest wearers. Helmets climb from the Frontiersman's Helm up to the Knight Helmet, and the tier 3 pieces are the ones to aim for. Late-game soldiers are best kept in the highest tier 3 sets you can make.
FAQ
What is the best early armor in Bellwright?
The Traveler's Garb is the early torso piece to aim for. It's a tier 1 piece with an armor value of 10 and no movement penalty, so it protects you without slowing you down.
Why can't I craft the Rugged Shirt at my loom?
The Rugged Shirt is made at the Weaver Hut, not on the Weaver Loom. The two are separate buildings, so you need to build the Weaver Hut too.
