Body armor is the gear your fighter wears over the torso in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, and it's one of the main things that keeps them standing in a fight. Pieces come in tiers from 0 to 6, and each choice means balancing protection, weight and cost. Knowing how the system works makes it much easier to pick armor that suits the way you fight.

How Body Armor Protects Your Fighter
Each fighter has four areas that armor covers: head, body, arms and legs. Every piece gives a protection number for those areas, and head armor sits in its own slot apart from the body. When a blow lands, the protection number for that area reduces the damage, so a higher number means less of the hit gets through.
Body armor covers the torso, which is where most hits land, so its body number does the most work. Body armor pieces also carry smaller numbers for the arms and legs, which means one piece protects more than the chest. That's why it makes sense to put your upgrades into body armor first.
How Armor Tiers and Materials Work
Body armor is sorted into tiers from 0 to 6, and higher tiers usually protect more. The top pieces are typically tier 6, and they also cost more, so the strongest armor is usually a goal to build toward rather than something you buy on day one.
Materials matter too. Cloth and leather are the lightest, chain mail sits in the middle, and scale and lamellar pieces give some of the strongest protection. A tier tells you a lot, but it doesn't tell the whole story, so compare the actual numbers before you pick.
Why Weight Matters for Body Armor
Every body armor piece adds weight to your fighter, and the total load slows their movement. The effect is most noticeable on foot, where heavy gear makes a fighter slower in battle. Lighter pieces help, but they often give less protection, so you're always trading one against the other.
Athletics is the skill that covers movement on foot. Raising it makes you faster, which helps offset the slowdown that heavy armor brings.
Which Body Armor Matters Most
If torso protection is your top priority, the Imperial Heavy Scale Armor over Mail Hauberk is the one to beat. It has the highest body armor of any wearable piece, though it is also one of the heaviest.
For a lighter build, the Sturgian Heavy Lamellar Vest is a strong option. It protects the torso well without weighing your fighter down, though its arm numbers are low, so something else should cover the arms. The right choice depends on how you plan to fight, since the best torso piece isn't always the best overall pick.
Where to Find Body Armor
Towns are the main place to buy. Each culture's towns carry their own styles, so Sturgian, Battanian and Imperial pieces mostly turn up in their home lands.
Loot is the other big source. Defeated lord parties often carry strong pieces, and tournaments can also hand out higher-tier gear.
Shop stock changes slowly, so the best pieces can take a long time to appear. Check back in towns from time to time rather than expecting top gear on your first visit.
FAQ
Is heavier body armor always better in Bannerlord?
No. What matters is how much protection a piece gives for the weight it adds. Some of the strongest pieces are lighter than their protection suggests, so a heavy piece with modest numbers can slow your fighter for little gain.
What body armor works best for cavalry?
The Vlandian Brigandine over Hauberk is a solid pick for fighting on horseback. It gives a little less torso protection than the Imperial heavy scale, but it covers the arms better, which suits a rider who needs a more balanced spread.
Do I need body armor early in the game?
Yes, even if it isn't the best you'll ever own. Going into a fight in civilian clothes leaves your fighter badly exposed, while even cheap armor makes a clear difference. Early on, buy only the cheapest pieces you can afford or wear the best loot you find, and save for better armor once you have the money.
