All 84 Ranged Weapons and Ammo in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Updated on November 1, 2026 (3 days ago)

Ranged weapons let you hit enemies before they reach you, which helps when you're outnumbered or want to thin out a group before melee starts. In Bannerlord, the main types are bows, crossbows, throwing weapons, and slings. Bows, crossbows, and slings each need their own ammunition: arrows, bolts, and sling bullets. Throwing weapons are thrown directly, so they need no separate ammunition.

How Ranged Weapons and Ammunition Work

Bows, crossbows, and slings each fire ammunition you carry, while throwing weapons are the things you throw. Arrows, bolts, and throwing weapons all sit in your four weapon slots, so they compete with your melee weapon for space. Ammunition runs down as you fire, so check how much you have before each battle.

The main counters to ranged attacks are shields and good footwork. Once enemies reach you, you'll want a melee weapon ready.

Bow Types: Shortbows, Longbows, and Recurve Bows

Shortbows, longbows, and recurve bows differ mostly in speed and force. Shortbows fire a bit more often, but each arrow hits less hard. Longbows and recurve bows send their arrows faster, but they reload more slowly. A shortbow suits steady, frequent shooting, while a longbow or recurve bow suits a slower, more deliberate style.

Crossbows: Strong Shots With Slow Reloads

Crossbows are accurate and powerful, and you don't need to lead moving targets as much as you would with a bow. Moving and shooting is harder with a crossbow than with a bow, though.

The trade-off is reloading, which takes longer than a bow's and leaves you exposed. Take cover to reload, then step out only when you're ready to fire. Because each shot takes time to set up, wait for a clear target rather than firing at the first enemy in sight.

Arrows and Bolts: Choosing the Right Ammunition

Arrows come in piercing, bodkin, and steppe types, and each one trades power for quantity. Piercing arrows hit hardest but come in the smallest stacks. Bodkin arrows hit less hard, but their stacks hold more arrows, and steppe arrows hit less hard still with the largest stacks of the three.

Carrying a mix of types balances damage against how many arrows you have. You can save your hardest-hitting arrows for the toughest targets while still having plenty to shoot.

Bolts are the ammunition for crossbows. Crossbows hit harder than most bows, so each bolt lands with more force than a typical arrow, which makes them a strong pick against well-armored enemies.

Throwing Weapons: Close-Range Hits

Throwing weapons include knives, daggers, axes, javelins, and rocks. Javelins hit hardest of the group and reach farthest, while axes, daggers, and knives reach less far, so they work best up close.

Knives and daggers are light and quick, but they hit weakly, which makes them best for finishing off an enemy who's already hurt. Javelins, knives, and daggers can also switch to one-handed melee, but none of them matches a dedicated melee weapon. Knives can't block incoming attacks.

Axes are fast and deadly, and they're effective against shields. They're inaccurate, though, so keep them away from your own troops, and they can only be used as thrown weapons. Javelins are hefty but slow, yet they're very deadly and strong against shields. Rocks are the weakest throwing option, but they can still hurt.

Slings and Sling Bullets

Slings come in three types: wool, braided, and reinforced. They fire sling bullets, which come in three kinds: stone, chiseled, and lead. The reinforced sling is the most accurate and sends its bullets fastest, while the wool sling is the least accurate of the three. Lead bullets hit hardest but come in the smallest stacks, and stone bullets give you the most shots.

Burning Arrows and Bolts in War Sails

The War Sails expansion adds Burning Arrows and Burning Bolts, which deal extra fire damage. It also adds Nord throwing axes and javelins.

Where to Find Bows, Crossbows, and Ammunition

Bows and crossbows turn up in battlefield loot, and they're also sold in markets. Bolts are sold in markets too, so check there when you need to restock.

Throwing weapons come from battlefield loot as well, and some are sold in larger settlement markets.

FAQ

Q.

Can you shoot from horseback in Bannerlord?

Many bows can't be used on horseback, and most of the ones that can't are longbows and the heavier tribal bows. Most crossbows can't be reloaded while mounted, and light crossbows are the exception.

Q.

How many arrows and throwing weapons can you bring into battle?

Throwing weapons come in small stacks, so each slot holds only a few. Throwing skill perks raise how many fit, and certain perks make quivers bigger. To keep shooting for as long as possible in a battle, put a bow or crossbow in your first slot and fill the other three with ammunition.

Q.

Can you craft ranged weapons in Bannerlord?

Bows and crossbows can't be crafted in Bannerlord, while most throwing weapons can, javelins included. That means bows and crossbows have to be found or bought, while throwing weapons give you the option of making your own.
