All 41 Mounts and Pack Animals in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Updated on November 1, 2026 (3 days ago)

In Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, mounts are the horses and camels your troops and heroes ride, and pack animals are the mules, sumpter horses and camels that haul supplies. Mounts speed your party up on the campaign map and are needed to turn foot soldiers into cavalry. Pack animals give you room to carry loot, food and gear, which becomes a real problem once your army grows. Each group does a different job, and knowing which is which keeps you from buying the wrong animal.

Bannerlord Mount Types: War Horses, Riding Horses, Noble Mounts and Camels

Bannerlord sorts its animals by what they're meant for, and the group tells you a lot before you check any stats. Riding horses are the everyday mounts, the ones most of your early cavalry will sit on. War horses are sturdier and built for battle, so they're the animals you want when your troops need to hit hard.

Noble mounts sit at the top and are among the best animals the game has to offer. Camels form their own group, all tied to the Aserai: everyday riding camels, the War Camel for battle and the rare Husnphree. Pack animals such as mules and sumpter horses are built to carry rather than fight.

How Horses Speed Up Your Party

Horses greatly improve your party's movement speed on the campaign map, so an army with plenty of mounts covers ground much faster than one walking on foot. Spare horses help as well. A foot soldier carrying a spare horse adds a little speed, though less than a mounted unit does, and the game gives a further bonus when most of the army is mounted.

The catch is the herd. When the animals in your party run ahead of your troop count, the whole party slows down, and the bigger the imbalance, the harder it hits. That's why a few spare horses are useful, while a huge train of animals can cost you more speed than it gives.

Pack Animals and Carrying Room

Every party can carry only so much, and loot, food and spare gear all count toward that limit. Pack animals raise it far more than riding horses do. Mules, sumpter horses and pack camels each add a large amount of room, while a riding horse adds only a little. That makes them the answer when you're trading or looting and your party runs out of space.

They don't make your party any faster, so don't buy them for speed. Think of them as the baggage train, not a speed upgrade.

Riding Skill, Battle Stats and Losing Horses

Riding is a skill, and a mount is only as useful as the rider's score allows. Basic horses ask for little Riding, war horses ask for more, and noble mounts need a high score. Until a hero's Riding is high enough, they can't ride that mount at all.

In battle, a mount's charge damage, hit points and maneuver decide how useful it is. Charge damage counts most for war horses that hit hard on the first pass, while hit points decide how long the animal can keep going. Each horse also takes a harness, from a simple saddle to full horse armor. Heavier armor protects the horse but slows it down, so it's a trade-off.

Horses can be hurt or killed in battle, and unlike weapons and armor, they don't last forever. Keeping a few spares on hand is the usual way to stay covered.

Where to Buy Mounts and Pack Animals

Towns and villages sell mounts, but what's on offer varies from place to place. Basic riding horses are easy to find, and mules and sumpter horses are cheap, so they make an easy start. War horses are harder to come by, and towns often stock only a couple. Villages that produce horses are your best bet for war horses, since they usually sell a few.

Noble mounts are rarely sold in ordinary shops. You're more likely to earn one through a reward or the spoils of a battle. Battle loot can also bring in horses, though not every animal arrives in good shape.

Horses and Cavalry Upgrades

Turning foot soldiers into cavalry takes a horse, which is the main reason mounts matter to an army. Light cavalry needs a basic riding horse, and heavy cavalry needs a war horse. The horse is taken from your inventory when the upgrade happens.

Pack animals and noble mounts can't be used for upgrades, so a stack of mules won't help you build cavalry. Handing a horse to a foot soldier doesn't work either. Soldiers have to level up along the path that leads to cavalry first, and then a horse from your inventory completes the upgrade.

Which Mounts Matter Most

For most players, riding horses and war horses matter most, since they decide how large your cavalry can grow. Noble mounts are the prizes worth chasing, especially for a hero who needs the best in a fight.

For a hard-hitting battle horse, the Vlandian Royal Destrier has the strongest charge, and the Battanian Thoroughbred is the toughest mount to bring down. For sheer speed, the Aserai Wadar Hotblood leads the range.

FAQ

Q.

Why is my party slow even when I have plenty of horses?

Plenty of horses can still slow you if the herd grows bigger than your troops can handle. Unridden horses count toward that, and so do livestock such as cows, sheep and hogs. To see exactly what's slowing you down, hover over your movement speed in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Q.

Can you sell a noble mount?

Yes. Noble mounts can be sold or traded, so you don't have to keep one you can't use. If you do keep one, it still adds to your party's speed, so it isn't wasted even if you never ride it.

Q.

Is the fastest horse always the best?

Not always. The fastest horses sit very close together on speed, and the difference is hard to feel on open ground. A slightly slower horse with stronger battle stats is often the better pick when you're fighting, so choose for the job you have.
