Where to Hunt Each Animal
- Tall Trees is big-game country. Grizzly Bears, Elk, Cougars, Deer, Wolves and Foxes all turn up there. Brumas the Bear lives on the Nekoti Rock summit and in the northern Tall Trees nearby.
- The Great Plains are where to find Buffalo, southwest of Blackwater. Buck turns up there too.
- The desert around Armadillo has Armadillos, and Coyotes roam open desert, including around Hanging Rock north of town. Rattlesnakes turn up across open country, including Cholla Springs. Vultures may gather around bodies after a fight.
- Nuevo Paraíso is home to Khan the Jaguar at Ojo del Diablo. Mules show up on the routes between Escalera and Chuparosa.
- New Austin and West Elizabeth hold the other legendary animals. Gordo the Boar lives at Stillwater Creek in New Austin, and Lobo the Wolf lives in Aurora Basin in West Elizabeth.
- Towns have Chickens and Dogs. Cows show up on farms and in nearby open areas.

The Legendary Jackalope
The Legendary Jackalope comes from the free Hunting and Trading Pack, so it's add-on content, not part of the base game. It isn't on the Master Hunter ladder. It's the target for Expert Hunter outfit Scrap 4. Look for it on Gaptooth Ridge, around Cholla Springs or on the cliffs west of Twin Rocks. You don't need bait.
Which Animals Fight Back
In Tall Trees, grizzlies and cougars can turn a hunt dangerous. These animals can hurt you or cost you:
- Grizzly Bear: One swipe can kill you.
- Cougar: Cougars can stalk you quietly and attack your horse.
- Boar: Boars can charge.
- Coyote: Coyotes can attack on foot. You're usually safe while mounted.
- Bull: A bull charges you inside the MacFarlane's Ranch pen.
- Dog: Killing a dog can get you a bounty.
FAQ
Can you hunt bats in Red Dead Redemption?
No. Bats can't be hunted or skinned. They appear as scripted flocks near the mansion in Tumbleweed.
What's the difference between Bear and Grizzly Bear?
Bear turns up during hunter encounters, and its parts are separate from the Grizzly Bear's. Grizzly Bears live in Tall Trees and sometimes near Beecher's Hope, so that's where to hunt them for Grizzly parts.
Do Undead Nightmare creatures count?
No. Undead Nightmare creatures and multiplayer-only animals sit outside the Story Mode hunting roster and the Master Hunter ranks.
