Landmarks of Riches starts at the Obelisk northwest of Owanjila, and Poisonous Trail starts in the Cairn Lake cabin. Each map leads to a landmark, and the stop there hands you the next map or the payout, usually in gold bars. Le Trésor des Morts is the one chain that needs a pre-order.

Le Trésor des Morts
The sheriff's office lockbox in Limpany is a separate gold bar, not part of this hunt, so don't count it here.
Chick's Treasure
Chick's $35 goes toward the gang's debt, not into your pocket. Treat the sketch as part of the debt mission.
Sketched Map
The mine-wall clue near Annesburg is optional. The carved tree and the rock cache don't need it.
Torn Treasure Map
Each half sits in a drawer at a hermit's home, so you can collect them on separate trips and combine them later.
Each hunt is a chain: a map, the landmark it leads to, then the next map or the payout. Leads to shows where the clue points, and Reward shows what each stop hands you, either the next map or the payout. Chapter 2+ means the stop opens from Chapter 2 onward, and Epilogue means it opens after the story ends. A roaming encounter is random, and a Fence fallback is a backup way to get the first map. Access note flags anything that can be missed.
Best Order to Run Treasure Hunts
Start with Landmarks of Riches and Poisonous Trail. Both begin with a free map you can take on the spot. Jack Hall Gang starts with a map you buy from Maximo, and High Stakes waits on a roaming Treasure Hunter.
- Landmarks of Riches. Examine the plaque on the Obelisk northwest of Owanjila to take Map 1. No other mission has to come first. The Giant Sundial on Mount Shann pays six gold bars, which ties for the biggest payout of any hunt.
- Poisonous Trail. Open the lockbox under the bed in the Cairn Lake cabin to take Map 1. The cave behind the Elysian Pool waterfall pays four gold bars, and the route to it needs a lantern.
- Jack Hall Gang. Buy Map 1 from Maximo on the ridge northwest of Flatneck Station. Decline his first offer and the price drops from $10 to $5. The chain ends on a small island in O'Creagh's Run for two gold bars, which is worth doing but pays less than the two hunts above.
- High Stakes. Watch for the roaming Treasure Hunter in the hills between Strawberry and Valentine. Lasso or hogtie him and search him for Map 1. The last stop is a cliff crevice near Bacchus Station, worth three gold bars.
- Chick's Treasure and the Sketched Map. Both start in Chapter 2. Take Chick's sketch during Money Lending and Other Sins. The Sketched Map comes from the chimney in Reed Cottage, north of Annesburg, and its rock cache holds one Gold Ingot.
- Torn Treasure Map. Collect both halves whenever you pass through, in either order. Spoiler: the Mended Map leads to a cave that opens only in the Epilogue, after the story ends, and it holds Otis Miller's Revolver.
- The Elemental Trail and Le Trésor des Morts last. The Elemental Trail also opens in the Epilogue. Its final stop pays one gold bar and the Crow Beak Trinket, which increases looted ammo by 10%. Le Trésor des Morts needs a pre-order, covered below.
Missable Hunts and Edition Limits
- Both first maps have a Fence backup. If you leave Maximo without buying, a Fence sells Map 1 later. After three missed Treasure Hunter encounters, a Fence sells Map 1 too, so walking away doesn't lock you out of the chain.
- Chick's map is tied to his debt mission. Get Chick's sketch during Money Lending and Other Sins, before you leave the mission.
- Le Trésor des Morts needs a pre-order. On console, the digital pre-order has to be placed before August 15, 2018. On PC, a separate 2019 Rockstar Games Launcher pre-order also included the map. Special and Ultimate Edition ownership alone doesn't unlock it.
- Landmarks of Riches and The Elemental Trail came with a post-launch update. Copies from before that update don't have them.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Thinking Poisonous Trail needs Flaco Hernandez. You don't need his stranger mission to start. The cabin lockbox opens without it.
- Counting the same bars twice. The bars on these hunts are the same stashes covered in Gold Bars. Count them once when you plan a route.
FAQ
When can I start treasure hunts?
Most first stops open in Chapter 2. High Stakes starts when a random Treasure Hunter shows up, so its timing depends on when you meet him.
Is the Gold Ingot from the Sketched Map a gold bar?
No. A Gold Ingot is a separate item worth $300, so it doesn't count as one of the gold bars.
