Choosing a role

Choose the activity loop that fits how you want to spend time in the online world. Bounty Hunter work is contract and pursuit-focused; Trader ties hunting to camp production and deliveries; Collector rewards patient searching; Moonshiner adds a Shack-based production business after the Trader gate; Naturalist splits wildlife study for Harriet from hunting for Gus. These roles sit alongside camps, Free Roam activities, missions, and posse play, so they can shape your routine without replacing the rest of the game.

Progression

Role XP is separate from ordinary character rank. Each base role uses 20 Role Ranks divided into Novice, Promising, Established, and Distinguished tiers, with each tier covering five ranks. Rank progress grants Role Tokens and unlocks role items, skills, upgrades, and other role pursuits. A role's access requirement and its progression track are separate questions: meeting the entry requirement starts the path, while role activity is what advances it.

Access and platform scope

Red Dead Online roles describe the player-created-character online experience. The online mode can be reached through Red Dead Redemption 2 or the standalone Red Dead Online product, but those ownership paths do not create different role systems. The native platform scope is PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S access the corresponding console versions through backward compatibility. Story Mode, older Red Dead multiplayer, and edition-specific promotions are outside these role descriptions.

Keeping the reference useful

Live-service values and limited-time activities can change, so they are not used to define a role. The stable activity loop, access requirement, progression model, and named role equipment are the useful signals for choosing a path.
