Red Dead Online's legendary animals belong to the Naturalist role. They're named variants of common species, each with its own coat or markings. Some you'll find while roaming. Others come through Harriet Davenport's Sighting Missions. Either way, you decide what each animal is for: a sample for Harriet or a pelt for Gus.

Dark
Shadow Buck is the odd one out. It has no search area you can rely on, so Harriet's menu is the only way to get it.

Patterned
Region is the broad area to search, not an exact spot. Access shows how you meet the animal: free roam, or a Harriet sighting mission. Each progress mark records an encounter with one named Online variant. Field Guide stamps, research actions and category trade-ins are separate.
Unlocking Harriet Davenport's Sighting Missions
Reach Naturalist rank 5, then visit Harriet to check her rotating Sighting Mission menu. The target you want may not be available when you check.
Free-roam animals use the regions listed for each variant. Harriet's rank-5 unlock opens her mission menu; it doesn't put every target on offer at once.
Samples for Harriet or Pelts for Gus
The two routes pay out differently, so pick the one you want before you hunt.
| Route | What you do | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Sample for Harriet | Sedate the animal with Varmint Rifle sedative ammo, then sell the sample to Harriet | Naturalist XP and cash |
| Pelt for Gus | Kill and skin the animal, then sell its pelt to Gus | The matching garment, unlocked for purchase |
Selling a pelt doesn't hand you the garment for free. It unlocks the matching garment so you can buy it. Gus hunts don't earn Naturalist role XP, so sample for Harriet when you're leveling the role.
Finding Each Animal on the Map
Start in the animal's region, then use the Legendary Animal Map to narrow things down. The map marks broad areas, not exact spots, so don't expect a pin. Pheromones help once you're close. They reveal an animal that's already nearby, but they don't force one to spawn.
Field Guide Stamps and Trade-Ins
Selling a unique sample to Harriet earns that animal's Field Guide stamp. Repeat samples of the same animal don't add a new stamp. Once a whole category is fully stamped, you can trade it in, which resets its stamps. Full Field Guide research also covers tracking, studying and photographing. The rewards here come from sedating and sampling for Harriet, or killing and skinning for Gus.
Mistakes That Stall a Hunt
- Planning one hunt for both rewards. Sampling and skinning each need their own encounter, so set up each one separately.
- Pushing on after a run of kills. Harriet can refuse service for a while after animal kills. If Harriet turns you away, come back later rather than assuming the mission is locked.
Checked October 11, 2026. Red Dead Online values and Harriet's rotation can change with updates, so trust the game if it shows something different from this.
