- In Double Down, players can either play as Hold Outs as Franklin and Lamar, or as Attackers trying to take out the Hold Outs.
How to start an Adversary Mode
Adversary Modes belong to GTA Online's competitive job system. Choose a named mode from the Adversary Mode job category when it is available, or join a session through a host invitation. The update heading shows when that mode joined GTA Online; it does not guarantee that the job is selectable in the current live rotation.
Read the objective before launching. These modes often use asymmetric roles, so the opposing sides may have different vehicles, weapons, movement limits, lives, or victory conditions. In Come Out to Play, runners stay on foot while hunters remain on motorcycles or ATVs. Hunting Pack gives one side a bomb-rigged runner vehicle, defenders to protect it, and attackers trying to slow it below the safe speed. Treating both sides like a standard deathmatch is an efficient way to lose with confidence.
Main mode families
Escort and pursuit
Come Out to Play, Hunting Pack, Extraction, Entourage, The Vespucci Job, and Hunting Pack (Get Lamar) revolve around a protected runner, target, or vehicle. The escort side should keep a route open and stay close enough to interfere. The opposing side usually wins by delaying, stopping, or eliminating the protected target rather than chasing unrelated kills.
Territory and objective control
Cross the Line, Drop Zone, Turf Wars, Land Grab, Occupy, Stockpile, and Flag War reward movement around a contested space. Victory may depend on crossing a boundary, holding a zone, claiming tiles, controlling bases, moving briefcases, or returning a flag. Watch the scoring condition carefully: occupying the right place can matter more than winning every gunfight.
Survival and restricted combat
Every Bullet Counts limits ammunition, Slasher changes the balance between hunter and hunted, Condemned passes a timed threat between players, and Resurrection lets a teammate's kill bring a spectator back into the round. Juggernaut, Hardest Target, and Double Down also make one protected or strengthened role central to the result. Before the round begins, identify who has limited lives and which elimination actually ends the contest.
Vehicle and aircraft contests
Hasta La Vista, Rhino Hunt, Sumo, Deadline, Overtime Rumble, Motor Wars, Bombushka Run, Air Quota, The Vespucci Job, and the Arena War set lean heavily on assigned vehicles. Their objectives range from crushing cyclists or pushing rivals out of a zone to landing on scoring platforms, surviving in a heavy aircraft, or eliminating opponents with a Shotaro's energy trail. Smooth positioning and role discipline usually matter more than bringing your usual Freemode habits with you.
Remixes and large assaults
A Remix keeps the recognizable idea of an earlier mode but changes important rules, vehicles, roles, or terrain. Hunting Pack (Remix) moves its convoy fight onto raised platforms, Sumo (Remix) adds a shifting safe zone, and The Vespucci Job (Remix) replaces the original vehicle setup with movie-themed choices. Read the Remix description on its own instead of assuming the original strategy still works.
Later assault modes expand the scale. Assault on Cayo Perico sends attackers through the island toward a terminal while defenders try to stop them. Assault on ATT-16 uses successive military objectives, and Mansion Raid sends attackers through a luxury property toward its vault while defenders hold the building. These reward teams that understand the next objective before the fight moves on.
Preparation that actually helps
Before matchmaking or hosting, check four things in the mode description:
- Your role: runner, escort, attacker, defender, target, hunter, or another specialist position.
- The loss condition: elimination, a stopped vehicle, an expired timer, lost territory, or a failed delivery can end the attempt.
- Respawns and shared lives: some sides return repeatedly, while others have a single life or depend on a protected teammate.
- The scoring rule: kills may be secondary to checkpoints, zones, tiles, packages, flags, survival time, or staged objectives.
For escort and target modes, agree on who protects the objective instead of having the whole team chase. In territory modes, spread out enough to contest more than one point but remain close enough to recover a threatened zone. In vehicle modes, leave room for the runner or scoring vehicle; a friendly traffic jam is still a traffic jam.
Availability and version boundaries
Release groups are historical labels. Live availability, seasonal scheduling, and bonus payouts can change independently, so an older mode may not always appear alongside the update that introduced it. Temporary weekly incentives are not part of the mode definition.
The Vespucci Job (Remix) is grouped by the update that introduced it, but that label does not by itself restrict the platforms where the job can be played. Check the specific mode and your game edition for access. Story Mode activities, ordinary races, and player-created jobs are separate from the named Adversary Modes covered here.
FAQ
How do I start a GTA Online Adversary Mode?
Open GTA Online's competitive jobs and choose the Adversary Mode category when the mode is available, or accept an invitation from a host. If a named mode is absent, its live availability may have changed.
Why can I not find an older Adversary Mode?
The update label records when the mode was introduced, not whether it is active now. Live rotation, seasonal scheduling, and the GTA Online version you are using can affect what appears.
Does the Added in field mean I need to own that update or a property?
No. Added in identifies the release group associated with the mode. It is not a property requirement and does not confirm current availability.
Are Remix modes the same as the originals?
No. A named Remix can change vehicles, terrain, role types, safe zones, or other core rules. Use the original only as a starting point and read the Remix objective before playing.
Are Arena War modes all vehicle deathmatches?
No. The Arena War group includes elimination, capture-the-flag, checkpoint gathering, pursuit, bomb passing, tag-team play, racing, survival, and ball-control formats.
Are player-created jobs and weekly bonuses included?
No. The scope is named GTA Online Adversary Modes. Player-created jobs, ordinary races, temporary bonus payouts, and Story Mode activities are separate.
