All 77 Buildings and Their Uses in The Wandering Village

Updated on November 1, 2026 (3 days ago)

The Wandering Village is a city-builder where your people live on the back of Onbu, a huge creature that carries the village across a land covered in toxic spores. Together, its buildings let the village eat, sleep, make what it needs, fight poison and keep Onbu healthy. Knowing what each group does, and how the pieces fit together, is the key to keeping everyone alive.

How Buildings Work on Onbu's Back

Every building sits on Onbu's back, and that space is limited, so each spot counts. Most buildings need villagers to run them, though a few work on their own. Their jobs fall into a handful of kinds: some gather from the land, some turn raw goods into something more useful, and some keep people fed, safe and sheltered. Knowing which kind a building belongs to tells you what it's for before you place it.

How to Unlock New Buildings

You don't start with every building open. Most unlock through the research tree, and research uses Ancient Notes, which scavengers bring back from shrines and labs. The Research Building is where you spend them, and it only does its job once it has a full crew.

Village Buildings and Housing

Villagers need somewhere to sleep, and the housing in this group covers that. Homes move up in steps, from tents to huts and cottages, and then to multi-family buildings that can each house 30 villagers. Where people live also affects how well they handle poison, and the cheapest multi-family option is also the weakest against it, so its residents need more herbs. Civic buildings such as the Community Plaza host festivals that lift happiness, though building a second one doesn't stack its happiness bonus.

Food and Storage Buildings

Food is what keeps a village alive, so it's usually the first thing to get running. The Berry Gatherer is the common starting point, and the more berry bushes around it, the more it yields. Kitchens turn raw food into better meals, and food stands serve villagers in remote spots too far from the main supply.

Food and materials need somewhere to wait until they're used, and that's what storage is for. Pantries and granaries hold food, with the granary built for much larger stocks. The Warehouse holds the biggest pile of building materials, and the Material Storage is a smaller, cheaper option. Water Tanks keep spare water for places where water is scarce, and the Onbu Cache holds food and medicine for Onbu.

Gathering and Refining Materials

Materials come in two stages, gathering and refining. Gathering brings in what the land and Onbu provide. Trees and boulders on the back give wood and stone, and a Quarry takes stone from a boulder when it's placed right next to one. The Mining Camp has workers break nearby rocks, the Deep Quarry gives unlimited stone, and the Dung Collector and Bile Extractor draw dung and bile straight from Onbu.

Refining turns those raw goods into the materials that make sturdier buildings. The Carpenter makes planks from wood, the Stonemason makes slabs from stone, and the Iron Furnace smelts iron ore into iron. The Blacksmith turns iron into tools and survival gear, and the Salvaging Yard breaks debris down into bricks, iron and glass.

Dung has a second life too. The Compost Heap turns it into compost for growing or into biogas for fuel. Biogas and Onbu bile both fuel the Blacksmith, the Iron Furnace and the Decontaminator, and the Laboratory uses bile to make medicine.

Feeding Onbu

Onbu has to eat, and the feeding buildings are how you keep it going. The Mycologist grows mushrooms, and the Onbu Kitchen turns them into food Onbu can eat. The Feeding Trebuchet launches that food into Onbu. The Feeding Pump is another route, and it delivers liquid food that fills Onbu more than solid food does.

Keeping Onbu Healthy and Trusting You

Onbu's trust in you decides how readily it listens to your commands, and its health decides whether the village survives. Several buildings draw from Onbu itself, including the Deep Quarry, the Bile Extractor and the Feeding Pump, and each draw costs some trust or health. The Onbu Discipliner can force Onbu to follow orders, but it hurts Onbu and damages its trust in you.

Care comes from the Onbu Pharmacy, which makes medicine, and the Onbu Doctor, which gives it to Onbu. Each medicine works differently, and the stronger ones come with a price. Watch Onbu's health closely, since a health bar that runs out ends the game.

Poison Buildings

Poison is the biggest threat in the game. Toxic spores blanket the land, and villagers working near the fungus they come from can be poisoned. Onbu's health starts to slip once its poison passes roughly 80%, so these buildings protect your people and Onbu alike.

The Decontaminator is the main answer. It burns poisonous fungus, clears the growth around it, and runs on biogas or Onbu bile. Its workers are fully protected from poison, but you only need them during an outbreak, so assign them when poison hits instead of leaving them idle.

The Purifier takes a quieter route, working passively over a 10-square area to neutralize fungal growth and collect nearby spores. On the care side, the Herbalist grows herbs, the main cure for poisoned villagers, and herbs that go unharvested rot into compost that helps the next crop. The Village Doctor treats poisoned villagers with those herbs, while the Spore Distillery turns spores into Fungal Essence, though its fumes can poison the workers running it.

Exploration Buildings

Many of the things your village needs most, such as new villagers, Ancient Notes and iron, lie beyond Onbu's back. The Scavenger Hut sends one or two villagers out to search, and searching places near Onbu costs almost nothing. Parties bring back villagers from settlements, iron from mines and Ancient Notes from shrines and labs. A party may come back poisoned, but a Village Doctor can treat them.

The Scout Tower widens your view of the map and extends how far scavengers can reach. Its effects stack, up to three towers. The Radio Tower is a one-off: you can build only one, it can't be deconstructed or destroyed once it's up, and building it starts the story.

Where to Place Buildings

Many buildings can only go on one part of Onbu, so the spot you pick matters. The Hornblower and Onbuologist go at the front, and the Dung Collector goes at the rear. The Fishery, Seawater Collector, Scavenger Hut and Scout Tower sit on the sides. The Bile Extractor goes on the gallbladder, the Blood Extractor and Injector at the heart, the Feeding Pump on the stomach and the Deep Quarry on the spine.

Farms and Herbalists need grass plots, and the Mycologist needs dirt. Link the buildings that work together, such as water beside farms and kitchens beside pantries, and keep storage close to whatever uses it. Roads help too, since villagers walk faster on them.

Which Buildings to Build First

Start with what keeps people fed, sheltered and watered, then get research moving. The Berry Gatherer is the first food building most players place. Tents are fine at the very start, but huts are worth building soon after, since more villagers arrive later. Carpenters and stonemasons come early too, because their planks and slabs make sturdier buildings than the basics.

Get the Research Building running early, since it's how you unlock new buildings. Check the tech tree early as well, because it shows what you'll need for poison before poison shows up. Have a Herbalist and a Village Doctor ready before your first poison cloud. Build the Scavenger Hut as soon as you can, since it brings in villagers and Ancient Notes for very little cost.

FAQ

Q.

How much can storage hold?

A Pantry holds 50 of each food type and a Granary holds 200 of each. A Material Storage holds 75 of each material, a Warehouse holds 600 of each, and a Water Tank holds 150 water.

Q.

How do I cure Onbu's poison?

Treating Onbu with herbs cuts its poison by about 15% and slightly raises its trust. An Antitoxin, made at the Onbu Pharmacy, cuts poison by 25% and also raises trust. The Experimental Antitoxin clears all of the poison but wipes out its trust, and treatments only unlock once the Onbu Doctor is fully staffed and supplied.

Q.

How much does each food fill Onbu?

Plain mushrooms, launched by the trebuchet, cut Onbu's hunger by 15%. Mushroomballs cut it by 25% and raise its trust, and nutritious mushroomballs cut it by 60%.

Q.

Can I build more than one Research Building?
