Monsters are the creatures you fight as you travel through Tales of Eternia Remastered, from zombies and specters to trolls and dragons. They attack in battle, drop items when they're defeated, and can sometimes be stolen from. The game keeps a record of each one in its monster book.

How the Monster Compendium Works
Mazet in Morle hands you the monster book early in the story, and the game calls it the Monster Compendium. It's where every monster you meet gets recorded.
Meeting a monster in battle is enough to add it, and you don't need a special item to do so. Each monster has its own numbered entry, so the book shows you which ones you've already recorded and which are still missing. Keep fighting your way through the world, and the list fills in as you go.
Weaknesses, Drops and Steals
Spectacles are an item that reveal a monster's elemental weaknesses. You don't need them to fill the monster book, but they're useful in fights, because knowing what a monster is weak against helps you pick the right attacks.
Drops and steals differ from monster to monster, and some items can only be taken by stealing. That makes steal rates worth a look if you want a complete item collection.
Where and When to Find Monsters
Many monsters appear in random battles as you explore, so where you go matters. Zombies and specters in the Rasheans area only come out at night, and some monsters show up mainly in forests or on beaches. If you're missing an entry, try the area and time of day it's tied to.
Rare Monsters That Are Hardest to Collect
A few monsters are easy to miss because they only appear in side activities. Chamballoon counts toward the book during the Chamballoon minigame in Chambard, so play it when you pass through.
Red Dragon and Phoenix appear in the forest on Farlos Island at night, and they can be too tough to fight when you first reach that area. It's worth coming back once you're stronger.
Spoiler note: the last entries in the book belong to late-game bosses.
FAQ
Can you turn off random monster battles?
Yes. The remaster lets you turn off enemy encounters, and you can also adjust how often they happen.
Do boss fights count toward the monster book?
Yes. Bosses have their own numbered entries, and the final battle adds two more, so the book can't be finished before the end of the story.
