Build a castle in the desert during the Crusades in Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition, a castle-building strategy game. It runs in real time, so the action keeps moving while you plan, and you have to make decisions quickly. Each battle starts with a small patch of land and a few resources, and your first job is to get people settled there.
You start by building hovels, which are simple homes that let peasants move in. Woodcutters and quarries give those peasants jobs, and the wood and stone they produce pay for your next buildings. Farms and a granary keep food in stock, since running out hurts how happy your people are. Taxes, set at your Keep, turn their work into gold, but higher taxes make people unhappy, and popularity decides whether they stay or leave.
Gold pays for soldiers, which you can train at a barracks or hire from a mercenary post. Each battle asks you to defend your kingdom and defeat the enemy lord or lords. The game offers historical campaigns, skirmish battles against computer lords, and a co-op trail where you team up with a friend online.

Units
The units in Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition are the soldiers and specialists you use to attack enemy castles and defend your own. European troops are trained at the Barracks and a few other buildings, Arab mercenaries are hired at the Mercenary Post, and the Bedouin units added in this edition are hired at the Bedouin Stockade. Each group is recruited in its own way and suits different jobs, from holding a line to breaking walls.
AI Lords
AI lords are the computer-controlled rivals in Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition, and each one brings a castle, an army and a set of tactics of their own. The roster runs from the original lords and the Warchest lords through the new lords at launch, lords added in later updates and paid DLC packs. Their play styles range from economy-focused to defense-heavy to aggressive, so each lord calls for a different plan.
Castle Buildings
Castle buildings are the keeps, gatehouses, towers, traps and defenses that protect a settlement in Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition, and military buildings support them with troops and supplies. Towers give archers range and shelter, gatehouses let your own soldiers move in and out, and pitch ditches and killing pits hurt attackers before they reach the keep. Lookout Towers and turrets are cheap and hold few troops, while Square and Round Towers hold more and can mount a ballista or mangonel.

Stronghold Crusader DE gameplay tips
- Play the Tutorial first. You'll find it on the main menu. It teaches the basic economy and combat, so the early steps make sense before a real battle starts.
- Keep popularity at 50 or higher. Below 50, people start to leave, which thins out the workers your buildings depend on.
- Plan your food early. Farms only go on grassland near an oasis, and that fertile ground is limited. Decide where your farms will go before you commit space to other buildings.
- Check what a barracks needs before you train. It requires spare peasants, weapons from the Armory, and gold. If your Armory is short on weapons, a Mercenary Post or Bedouin Stockade can hire troops for gold, with no weapons to make.
- Guard your lord during historical missions. If your lord dies or the time limit runs out, the mission is lost. Keep your lord safe and keep an eye on the clock.
- Pick your starting lord with care. A Crusader or Arabian lord changes your starting troops and which religious buildings you get. The choice does not change which troops you can recruit, so pick the start you want.
