All 18 Masks and Their Powers in Soulmask

Updated on November 1, 2026 (3 days ago)

Masks are the gear you wear on your face in Soulmask, the survival game where you build a tribe and fight to get by in a harsh ancient world. Each one gives your character its own bonuses, from tougher defense and better stealth to help with hunger and bleeding, and most can also switch you into a special mode called Mimicry. You pick a starting mask when you create your character, then find or craft the rest as you explore. The mask you wear shapes how you fight, travel and survive.

How Masks Work in Soulmask

A mask gives you its passive bonuses for as long as you wear it. Each mask also has its own tree of nodes, and you unlock them by raising the mask's level and spending crystals, such as Green and Blue Crystals. Masks also set your energy capacity and recovery rate, which limit how often you can use their special abilities.

Each node needs the mask to reach a set level, so the deeper nodes open up as the mask levels. Once a mask reaches its Mimicry level, you can activate Mimicry, which transforms you into the mask's figure and unlocks its stronger effects. Most masks also have an active ability you trigger while in Mimicry.

Choosing Your Starting Mask

At character creation you pick one of three starting masks: Civilization, Conquest or Rich. Each points you toward a different style. Civilization suits players who want to take hits and hold the front line, Conquest fits stealthy play and sneak attacks, and Rich is built around bows and hunting.

You don't have to lock in right away, but upgrading a mask costs resources, so it helps to pick a playstyle before you put much into one.

How to Get New Masks

Ancient Ruins can drop the starting masks once they reach level 25 or higher. Holy Ruins, the high-level ruins, hold most of the stronger masks, and each mask needs a ruin at a set level or above. Some masks turn up broken instead, and you rebuild them at the Mysterious Stone Table with the right modules and Green Crystals.

Shifting Sands Masks

Shifting Sands adds four Egyptian god masks: Horus, Anubis, Sobek and Amun-Ra. Horus comes to you automatically when the expansion's story begins, while the other three come from bosses in the desert's pyramids. Shifting Sands also has three more masks: Enforcer, Shadow Hunter and Ruler of the Barren Sands.

Which Soulmask Masks Are Best

In the base game, Ironblood Guard and Explorer come out on top in most rankings. Ironblood Guard is a defensive mask that lets you carry more and spend less stamina, while Explorer is an endgame pick that, in Mimicry, helps you shrug off poison, radiation and extreme heat. Among the Shifting Sands masks, Horus stands out for getting around, since its flight in Mimicry changes how you move across the map. Anubis suits big fights, because in Mimicry it can raise marked enemies it defeats as undead allies.

Rankings shift with each update, so treat any list as a starting point and try a few masks before you commit.

FAQ

Q.

Do you need the Shifting Sands DLC for the god masks?

Yes. Horus, Anubis, Sobek and Amun-Ra, along with Enforcer, Shadow Hunter and Ruler of the Barren Sands, belong to the Shifting Sands expansion, which is sold separately from the base game.

Q.

Is the Golden Legend mask free?

Yes. It came with a free add-on released as a gift for the game's first anniversary in Early Access, so you didn't need to buy it separately.

Q.

How can I upgrade a mask faster?

Repair it first. Repairing a mask gives it the Common Overclock effect, which speeds up its upgrades by 50%, so it's worth repairing a mask early if you plan to use it.
