Enrichment items are the toys and food feeders you place in an animal's habitat to give it something to do and keep it healthy. In Planet Zoo 2, they matter because an animal's mood depends partly on whether its needs are being met. Knowing what these items do, how to unlock them, and where to put them is the quickest way to keep your animals thriving.

What Enrichment Items Do for Your Animals
Enrichment gives an animal appropriate ways to interact with its surroundings, so it has something to engage with rather than sitting idle. In Planet Zoo 2, an animal's mood is shaped by the quality of its habitat and the care it gets from you. When enrichment runs short, the animal can turn lethargic and visibly unhappy, while well-cared-for animals show a wider range of natural behaviors.
Enrichment is also one of the things the game tracks for an animal's welfare, alongside its social group, the plants in its habitat, and its access to water and shelter.
Habitat and Food Enrichment in Planet Zoo 2
Every animal has two enrichment bars in Planet Zoo 2, one for habitat items, often called toys, and one for food. Each bar is tracked on its own, so both need your attention.
When you click either bar, the habitat menu opens with only the items that suit that animal. An item that works for one species isn't automatically right for another, so the same toy can be a great pick in one enclosure and a poor one in the next.
How to Unlock Enrichment Items
You can't place enrichment items until you research them. Enrichment research is split into topics, and each one unlocks a set of habitat or food items. Research is grouped by item type rather than by animal, so finishing one topic can unlock items for several animals at once. Frozen Food-Based Enrichments is a good example: researching that category opens those items across multiple animals together.
Since one topic can help more than one exhibit, it pays to research in batches rather than one animal at a time. Research the species you already own first, then move on to the enrichment that suits their welfare needs. That keeps your research pointed at the animals who need it most.
How to Place Enrichment Items So They Count
An item only helps if the animal can reach it, so place it where the animal can get to it easily. Larger groups may need more than one item to fill the bar all the way. Be careful with space too, since extra items can take up room the animal needs to move around. Adding one item at a time makes it easier to see what helped, and after each change, watch the animal and check its welfare information again.
Which Enrichment Items Matter Most
No single enrichment item is best for every animal. The right pick depends on which bar is low for that particular animal. Find the category that's in the red or falling, fix that first, and avoid copying a habitat layout from a different species.
FAQ
How do I unlock enrichment items in Planet Zoo 2?
Through Enrichment research. Sandbox mode has no research at all, so every enrichment item is available there from the start, which makes it a handy place to try layouts before using them in Career or Franchise.
Do enrichment research topics carry over between my zoos?
They do in franchise mode, where research is shared across all your zoos. A topic you finish once is available in the others, so you won't have to unlock the same items again for each new zoo.
Why is my animal still unhappy even though it has enrichment?
Enrichment is only one of the things that shape an animal's mood. A shortage of regular food or fresh drinking water can leave an animal lethargic too, so check those as well before deciding the toys aren't working.
