Dinkum is a survival game where you farm, mine, fish and craft on an island meant to feel like the Australian bush. Along the way you'll run into licences, which are permits that unlock tools, features and some crafting recipes and that you pay for with Permit Points. Most licences come in levels, so the first step is cheap and each step up costs more and asks for more skill. Knowing how that climb works makes it much easier to decide where your Permit Points should go.

What Licences Are in Dinkum
A licence is a permit that lets you use a certain tool, feature or set of recipes. Without one, the game keeps those things out of reach, so you can't buy a pickaxe or craft certain tools until the matching licence is yours. Licences are grouped by activity, so there's a mining group, a fishing group, a farming group and so on, each with its own run of levels.
Each level opens something new, such as a better tool or a new recipe. The point is to give you a reason to keep going, because the stronger tools sit behind the next level. Every licence you buy opens up a new part of the game.
How to Buy Licences With Permit Points
Licences cost Permit Points, which are separate from Dinks, the game's money. You spend them at Fletch, who sells licences in town. Pick the one you want, and buy it once you have enough points.
Milestones are the main way to earn points. These are goals that tick up as you play, such as chopping trees, catching bugs and walking set distances, and each one you finish pays out Permit Points. Bulletin Board tasks, daily requests from townsfolk and Museum donations also pay points, so it's worth checking them alongside your milestones.
Since points come from everyday things like chopping trees and catching bugs, you'll earn them as a side effect of normal play.
How Licence Levels Step Up in Dinkum
Most licences have several levels, and you buy each one in turn. You can't skip ahead, so each level needs the one before it. On the core lines, the first level costs 250 Permit Points, and the next two cost 1,000 and 3,000.
Higher levels also ask for a skill rank in the matching activity. Mining Licence 2 needs mining skill level 10, and Mining Licence 3 needs mining skill level 20.
Reaching the skill level isn't enough on its own. You still have to buy the licence from Fletch, so a player with a big stack of points can still be held back by a low skill rank. The skill numbers change from one line to the next, so check each level's requirement before you save up for it.
Which Dinkum Licences to Buy First
Mining is usually the best place to start. The first level is cheap, and the ore you get from mining feeds the copper and iron recipes on other licence lines, so it keeps the rest of your progress moving.
Logging and fishing come next. The first logging level gives you axes and opens up landscaping and building, while fishing gives you rods and fish. The second fishing level is also one of the steps toward the Commerce Licence.
The Farming Licence opens up the farm side of the game, and the Handling Licence builds on it. Handling lets you raise animals such as chooks, the Aussie slang for chickens, and vombats.
Vehicles are the big spend. Water, land and air each have their own licence level, and the air level is by far the most expensive, so it's usually a later goal.
The Commerce Licence adds 5% to what you earn from selling items at its first level. It only opens after you've upgraded the Mining, Logging, Fishing and Hunting licences to level 2, so treat it as a mid-game purchase rather than a first one.
Deep Mining is the one to plan for later. It needs Mining Licence 2 first, and it opens the Mine.
FAQ
Can you buy licences with Dinks in Dinkum?
Not directly. Licences cost Permit Points, but once you have a Bank you can convert Dinks into Permit Points at 500 Dinks per point. That's a useful fallback when your milestones are slow and you have spare cash.
Why can't I craft a copper or iron pickaxe in Dinkum?
Those recipes sit behind the higher mining licences. The copper pickaxe unlocks with Mining Licence 2, and the iron pickaxe unlocks with Mining Licence 3.
How do you get into the Mine in Dinkum?
Buy the Deep Mining Licence, which costs 3,500 Permit Points and needs Mining Licence 2 and mining skill level 10 first. It unlocks the Mine Deed, which you use to add the Mine to your island.
How much do vehicle licences cost in Dinkum?
The water vehicle level costs 1,200 Permit Points, the land vehicle level costs 2,400, and the air vehicle level costs 7,200. Farm vehicles sit on their own Agriculture Vehicle Licence, with attachments for harvesting, ploughing and planting.
