Balatro Decks are the starting setups that shape how each run begins. Balatro is a poker game where you play hands to beat score targets that climb as the run goes on, and the Deck you choose changes how you start. You can collect and keep track of every Deck in the game, from the one open from the start to the ones you earn later.

How Balatro Decks Work
Before a run begins, you pick one Deck, and it sets your starting terms before you draw a single card. Depending on the Deck, that can mean more hands or discards to play with, extra starting cash, more or fewer Joker slots, a bigger or smaller hand, or a different mix of cards in your deck. Jokers are cards that change how your hands score, and a Joker slot is the space you have to hold one.
Some Decks go further and change what shows up in the shop, such as Tarot and Planet cards, or Tags, which are rewards you get for skipping a Blind. A Blind is a score target you have to beat, and each round brings one. The toughest of them, the Boss Blind, has a special rule. Other Decks change how a hand's points are worked out.
That makes the Deck the first decision in every run. Your Jokers, your shop buys, and the cards you play all build on top of it, so the starting setup shapes how you approach the rest of the run.
Choosing a Balatro Deck for Your Play Style
Red and Blue are the easiest to compare. Red gives you one extra discard each round, so you can toss cards you don't want and draw replacements while hunting for a scoring hand. Blue gives you one extra hand each round, which is another try at scoring, and it also gives Jokers that grow each time you play a hand another chance to trigger. New players often start with Red because an extra discard feels safer, but Blue does more for a build meant to score big.
Yellow and Green are about money. Yellow starts you with $10 extra, which helps with early shop buys and can get you to interest sooner. Interest is the bonus you earn for holding onto cash. Green swaps interest for payouts at the end of each round: $2 for every hand you didn't use and $1 for every discard you didn't use. Since saved money earns nothing under Green, it suits fast hands that leave plays unused and players who spend most of their cash in each shop.
Black trades one hand each round for an extra Joker slot. That suits builds that need the room, such as ones built around a core multiplier, a copy Joker like Blueprint or Brainstorm, or a useful utility Joker. The smaller hand count also leans toward reliable hands, since you get fewer tries.
The rest steer your card mix, your shop, Tags, hand size, or scoring. Magic, Nebula, Ghost, and Zodiac lean toward Tarot, Planet, and Spectral cards and what the shop offers. Ghost's starting Hex card is a trade-off, since it destroys other Jokers. Checkered and Abandoned change the cards you start with: Checkered uses only Spades and Hearts, and Abandoned leaves out the face cards.
Painted, Plasma, Anaglyph, and Erratic change the rules of play more directly. Painted draws more cards at the cost of a Joker slot, so it suits Flush and Straight hands. Plasma evens out Chips and Mult, the two numbers that make up a hand's score, but doubles every score target, so it needs strong numbers in both. Anaglyph gives you a Double Tag after each Boss Blind, which works well if you save those Tags for strong skip rewards. Erratic rerolls every card's rank and suit at the start of each run, so the starting deck sets the direction.
Treat these as starting ideas rather than guaranteed best builds, because the Jokers you find along the way do a lot of the steering.
How to Unlock Balatro Decks
Only the Red Deck is open from the start. The rest have to be earned in one of three ways: reaching a Collection milestone, winning a run with a specific Deck, or winning a run on a Stake.
The Collection is the game's record of the items you've discovered. Reaching set milestones opens the color-named Decks, starting with Blue and ending with Black, so finding more items keeps moving you toward the next unlock. Winning with a color Deck opens a new one too. Each Deck in that route is tied to one of the Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, or Black Decks, so a win with one opens its paired Deck.
Each unlock comes with one clear goal, so it's easy to see what to aim for next.
Balatro Stakes and How They Unlock Decks
A Stake is a difficulty setting for a run, and it's separate from Decks, even though the two get mixed up a lot. A Deck changes how you start, while a Stake sets how hard the run is. Stakes matter for unlocks because winning on a Stake opens a new Deck as your reward.
Zodiac opens with a win on Red Stake or higher, Painted with a win on Green Stake or higher, Anaglyph with a win on Black Stake or higher, Plasma with a win on Blue Stake or higher, and Erratic with a win on Orange Stake or higher. Because of the "or higher" rule, a win on a harder Stake counts too, so you don't have to match the exact level. These unlocks reward you for beating a harder version of the game.
FAQ
Can you change your Deck during a run?
No. Once you pick a Deck, it stays for the whole run, and there's no switching partway through. Most other choices in Balatro can change as you go, so the Deck is a commitment you make at the start.
How many Collection discoveries do you need to unlock Balatro Decks?
Blue opens at 20 discovered items, Yellow at 50, Green at 75, and Black at 100. The count is a running total, so items you discovered earlier still count toward the next milestone.
What do you need to win with to unlock Magic, Nebula, Ghost, Abandoned, and Checkered?
Each one opens from a win with one specific color Deck. A win with Red opens Magic, Blue opens Nebula, Yellow opens Ghost, Green opens Abandoned, and Black opens Checkered.
Are Challenge Decks part of the Decks you pick before a run?
No. Challenge Decks are a separate group that you can't pick as a starting Deck.
