Risk of Rain 2 never hands you a build. It hands you a Soldier's Syringe, then another, then another, and waits to see what you do with them. Most items get stronger with every copy, so the real question isn't whether a pickup is good. It's whether it's the one worth stacking, and what you give up to stack it.

How Stacking Works for Every Item in Risk of Rain 2
A second copy of most items doesn't give you a new effect. It gives you the same effect again, stronger, and that's where runs are won. Cards with an Each extra copy line show how much one more copy adds, so you can compare two pickups before you commit.
- Straight stacking. Each copy adds the same amount. Soldier's Syringe gives you 15% attack speed and another 15% for every copy after that, so a late copy is worth as much as the first.
- Caps that grow. Some items limit how much they affect at once, and each copy raises that limit. Bolstering Lantern buffs up to 3 targets, and each copy adds one more.
Chance-on-hit items roll every time you land a hit, so a fast attack gets more rolls out of Ukulele or AtG Missile Mk. 1 than a slow one does.
Item Rarities in Risk of Rain 2 and Where Each One Comes From
- Common, Uncommon and Legendary (white, green and red) are the standard loot. They come from chests and shops, and 3D Printers turn scrap into more of them. These are the items you'll stack.
- Boss items (yellow) never come from chests. Each one is tied to a specific boss or special source.
- Lunar items (blue) pack a strong effect together with a drawback. You buy them with Lunar Coins, from Lunar Pods or the Bazaar Between Time.
- Void items (purple) arrive with Survivors of the Void. Each one corrupts a regular item, which is covered below.
- Meal items come with Alloyed Collective. You make them by combining items at the Wandering CHEF.
- Equipment is the active item on a cooldown, and it works differently enough to get its own section below.
How to Unlock Items You Haven't Found Yet
Some items won't appear in a run until you beat a challenge for them. Most are easy enough that you'll pick them up without trying, but a few are worth planning around.
- Free with normal play. Armor-Piercing Rounds unlock when you complete a Teleporter event, Medkit when you defeat an Elite, and Tougher Times when you die five times.
- Worth a dedicated run. Dio's Best Friend needs 30 minutes alive, 57 Leaf Clover needs 20 stages in one run, and Brainstalks and Purity both need Monsoon.
- Unlocks that come in bundles. One challenge, Blockade Breaker, unlocks all the Heresy items: Strides, Visions, Hooks and Essence. Another, Death Do Us Part, unlocks both Kjaro's Band and Runald's Band.
Unlocking an item only means it can drop. You still have to find it in a chest or shop, so an unlock doesn't guarantee you'll see it in your next run. The challenges page lists every requirement, and the survivors page shows how each survivor unlocks.
Void Items Replace Their Regular Twins
When you pick up a Void item, every copy of its regular twin turns into the Void item. Check the table before you grab one.
| If you hold | The Void item that replaces it |
|---|---|
| AtG Missile Mk. 1 | Plasma Shrimp |
| Bustling Fungus | Weeping Fungus |
| Chronobauble | Tentabauble |
| Dio's Best Friend | Pluripotent Larva |
| 57 Leaf Clover | Benthic Bloom |
| Fuel Cell | Lysate Cell |
| Lens-Maker's Glasses | Lost Seer's Lenses |
| Rusted Key | Encrusted Key |
| Tougher Times | Safer Spaces |
| Tri-Tip Dagger | Needletick |
| Ukulele | Polylute |
| Will-o'-the-wisp | Voidsent Flame |
| Runald's Band and Kjaro's Band | Singularity Band |
| Every Boss item | Newly Hatched Zoea |
Pluripotent Larva is the odd one. When it revives you, it also corrupts every item you hold that can be corrupted. Newly Hatched Zoea corrupts every Boss item you own, so don't grab it while you're carrying a Titanic Knurl or a Halcyon Seed you like.
Equipment: One Slot, One Button
You hold one piece of equipment at a time, and you fire it with its own button on a cooldown. The items below bend that rule.
- More uses. Fuel Cell adds a charge and cuts the cooldown. Functional Coupler lets you carry an extra piece of equipment.
- Faster cooldowns. Soulbound Catalyst shortens it on every kill, and Deus Ex Machina cuts it by 75% when you land a parry.
- Automatic and random use. Gesture of the Drowned fires your equipment the moment it's ready, and Bottled Chaos adds a random extra effect to every press.
- Rerolls. The Recycler swaps an item or a piece of equipment for a different one.
Some Lunar equipment hits everyone in range, your own team included. Glowing Meteorite and Helfire Tincture both do it, so fire them when your allies are out of range or you're playing alone.
Mistakes That Cost Runs With Risk of Rain 2 Items
- Grabbing a Void item without checking its twin. Corruption converts every copy you own at once.
- Pairing Gesture of the Drowned with equipment you save for emergencies. It fires whatever you hold as soon as it's ready, so a Foreign Fruit or a Blast Shower goes off when you don't need it.
- Taking a Lunar item on a build that can't carry the drawback. Shaped Glass cuts your max health by 50%, Purity adds an unfavorable roll to every random effect, and Stone Flux Pauldron slows you down. Each one is a real trade, and it pays off only when your build already covers the cost.
- Stacking luck against itself. 57 Leaf Clover, Ultimate Meal and Purity all change random rolls, so Purity works against the other two.
- Leaning on Delicate Watch. It breaks the moment you fall below 25% health, so it only pays off while you can stay healthy.
Yellow items come from bosses, not chests, and most are tied to one specific boss.
Equipment is the one active item you hold at a time, and it runs on a cooldown.
Red items are rare, and each one can define a build.
Blue items trade a strong effect for a drawback, and you pay for them with Lunar Coins.
Blue equipment costs Lunar Coins, and several pieces hit everyone around you.
Meals only come from the Wandering CHEF.
Purple items arrive with Survivors of the Void. Each one corrupts a regular item.
FAQ
How do you get Boss items in Risk of Rain 2?
Boss items never drop from chests. Each one is tied to a specific boss, so Titanic Knurl comes from Stone Titan and Queen's Gland comes from Beetle Queen. Trophy Hunter's Tricorn executes any enemy that can spawn a unique reward and drops that reward, so it works on more than just Teleporter bosses. A few Boss items come from elsewhere: Artifact Key from Bulwark's Ambry and Pearls from Cleansing Pools.
Do you need the expansions to find these items?
Items from Survivors of the Void, Seekers of the Storm and Alloyed Collective only appear in runs where that expansion is turned on.
What does Item Scrap do?
Item Scrap does nothing by itself. A 3D Printer takes the scrap first when you print an item of the same rarity.
What are temporary items in Risk of Rain 2?
With Alloyed Collective on, Substandard Duplicator gives you a temporary copy of every item you pick up. Each extra copy of the Duplicator adds another 10 seconds to how long those temporary items last.
