Pick Your Risk of Rain 2 Unlock Before Starting a Run
Challenges turn specific feats into permanent unlocks. Decide whether you want another survivor, something new for a loadout or an item reward. That choice tells you which survivor to play and what the run needs to accomplish.
Start with a survivor you want to try. Warrior asks you to survive through a Teleporter milestone, while Power Plant asks you to repair a robot with a Fuel Array. Those are different jobs: a careful stage clear will help with the former, but it cannot replace the repair in the latter. Compare the survivors before committing to an unlock.
For an item or equipment reward, look at what it does before building a run around its challenge. The items explain the effects and stacking. Flawless and Keyed Up both involve a Teleporter, but staying untouched and killing a boss quickly ask for different preparation.
Read the Restriction as Carefully as the Goal
A challenge can ask for the right action and still reject the attempt because you missed a condition. Before leaving the character select screen, look for these restrictions:
- The named survivor. An objective beginning with a survivor's name belongs to that character. Playing someone else will not earn their skill or skin.
- The same run. Keep a single-run objective together. Starting another run means starting that attempt again.
- A finishing blow. For Commando: Rolling Thunder, damaging an Overloading Worm is not enough. Commando must land the kill. MUL-T: Gotcha! also specifies the equipment used for the final hit.
- Simultaneous targets. Multikill! wants enemies killed together. Picking them off in a quick sequence does not meet the same condition.
- A particular mode or difficulty. Prismatically Aligned asks for a Prismatic Trial, while Deicide requires Monsoon. Plan the attempt in the right setting.
Some objectives fit into a run you already wanted to play. Advancement comes from a completed Teleporter event; Elite Slayer asks for an Elite kill. Let those happen as you learn, then set aside runs for restrictions you need to protect from the start.
Full Health, No Hits and Low Health Are Different Challenges
Flawless asks you to charge the Teleporter without getting hit. Huntress: Piercing Wind instead names a health condition across a qualifying stage, and Mercenary: Ethereal applies a full-health condition to a Prismatic Trial. Keep the exact objective in mind instead of treating them all as the same no-hit challenge.
REX: Bushwhacked reverses the problem: your health must stay below its limit for the entire Teleporter event. Naturopath is different again, asking you to reach and complete the required event without healing along the way. Decide which restriction you are protecting before you pick a fight or take a heal.
Skills, Mastery Skins and Artifact Trials Need Different Attempts
Alternate skill challenges test a survivor's actions, from an airborne attack to a particular finishing blow. A mastery skin asks for a Monsoon completion with its named survivor. Do not assume a skill objective needs Monsoon just because the mastery objective beside it does.
Artifact trials are goals of their own. If a trial is what you are chasing, the artifacts explain the codes and unlock requirements. Keep the trial's objective in mind rather than treating entry to the trial as completion.
Hidden Challenges and Late-Run Requirements (Spoilers)

True Respite and the Mastery Alternative
- True Respite: Choose to obliterate yourself at the Obelisk to unlock Mercenary.
- Mastery alternative: Obliterating on Monsoon also satisfies a Mastery challenge. Play as the survivor named in that challenge.
Hidden Survivor, Equipment and Artifact Unlocks
- Purified Freedom: Purify the Heart of the False Son using the Halcyon Seed to unlock False Son.
- Order Up!: Complete the Wok's recipe in Reformed Altar to unlock CHEF.
- Lost in Transit: Free the survivor inside the Solutional Haunt vault to unlock Drifter.
- A Broken Ritual: Revive the survivor within Soulbound Threshold to unlock Acolyte.
- King of the Hill: Travel to Prime Meridian and defeat the False Son to unlock Seed of Life.
- Experienced Rebirth: Gain the power of another life through an offering to the Shrine of Rebirth to unlock the Artifact of Rebirth.
- Dragged Below, alternative requirement: Escape the Planetarium to unlock Void Fiend. This is an alternative to the Simulacrum objective.
Hidden Collective Skin Choices
Accept the Collective's offering while playing Bandit, Artificer, REX, Loader or Captain for that survivor's Accept and Decompile challenge. Reject the offering while playing Commando, Huntress, MUL-T, Engineer, Mercenary or Acrid for that survivor's Purge challenge. Match the choice to the survivor whose skin you want.
Alternate Skills Tied to the Final Boss or a Hidden Unlock
- Commando: Retribution: Earn 8 karma, then defeat the final boss as Commando.
- Bandit: B&E: Kill the final boss with Lights Out while playing Bandit.
- Artificer: One Giant Leap: As Artificer, reach the final boss on the moon without activating a pillar.
- Captain: Smushed: Use a Supply Beacon to kill the final boss as Captain.
- False Son: Family Bonding: As False Son, have Aurelionite kill the final boss while the boss has at least one Lunar Ruin.
- CHEF: It's Getting Hot In Here!: As CHEF, apply 20 stacks of Burn to the final boss at once.
- Drifter: Leave No Trace: As Drifter, claim the contents of the lost backpack inside the Solutional Haunt vault.
Soulbound Threshold Skin Requirements
For Memento Mori, defeat what lies beyond the door of Soulbound Threshold as Bandit, Engineer, Artificer, REX, Captain or Acolyte. Each challenge requires its named survivor.
For Dying to Meet You, complete Soulbound Threshold before the fourth Teleporter event as Commando, Huntress, Acrid, Seeker, CHEF or Enforcer. Choose the survivor whose challenge you are attempting before setting out.
FAQ
Can I earn The Long Road and Commando: Incorruptible together?
Yes. Their stage-clear goals overlap. Play Commando and leave Lunar items untouched for the entire attempt to satisfy the extra restriction on Incorruptible.
Do duplicate Common items count toward The Basics?
No. The requirement is different Common items. Another copy of a Common item you have already discovered does not add a new type.
