You climb a spire by fighting enemies with cards from a deck you build as you go in Slay the Spire, a roguelike deck-building card game. Each climb is a new run, and the spire's layout, enemies, and bosses change from one run to the next. Your goal is to get as far up the spire as you can, which means beating the boss at the end of each act. Running out of health ends the run and sends you back to the bottom, but every run also earns points toward new characters, cards, and relics, and winning unlocks Ascension, a set of harder difficulty levels.
Before each run you pick a character, and each one has its own cards and style of play. Each act is a map of floors with branching paths, and on every floor you choose your next stop, such as a regular fight, an elite fight, a campfire, a shop, a treasure chest, or a random event. Elite fights are harder, but they drop relics, which are permanent items that boost you for the rest of the run, so taking a risk on an elite can pay off. Campfires let you heal or upgrade a card, and shops let you buy cards, potions, and relics or remove cards you no longer want, so the stops you pick shape your deck as much as your health.
Fights are turn-based card battles, where each turn gives you a fresh hand and three energy, and each card costs some of that energy to play, so you have to choose the cards that matter most. Enemies show the attack they plan to use next, which tells you whether to play cards that block the hit or cards that attack. Winning a fight earns gold and a choice of one of three random cards to add to your deck, and since you draw from that deck all run, every card you add or skip shapes your later fights. Potions are single-use items you can use on any turn, which makes them handy for a tough fight.
The series has two games. Slay the Spire is the original, a single-player game that reached full release in January 2019 and has four characters. Slay the Spire 2 is the sequel, which entered Early Access on Steam on March 5, 2026, with five characters and online co-op for up to four players. Each game has its own wiki covering relics, potions, and characters, and the sequel also covers enemies.

Slay the Spire gameplay tips
- Skip card rewards that don't fit your plan. Every weak card dilutes the rest of your deck, so passing on a card that doesn't fit often helps more than taking it.
- Remove your starting Strike and Defend cards when a shop or event offers the chance. They are the weakest cards you start with, and removing them gives your stronger cards a bigger share of your draws.
- Check the enemy's planned attack before you spend energy. A big hit means you should play blocking cards first, and a small one lets you spend your energy on attacks.
- Take a few normal fights early in Act 1 before facing any elites. Normal fights earn the gold and card rewards you'll need, and elites are much safer once your deck can handle them.
- At a campfire, heal when you're low, especially before a boss, and upgrade a card otherwise. An upgraded card makes every later fight stronger, while a boss fight with low health can end your run quickly.
