Slay the Spire is a card game where you work your way through a map of fights and build your deck as you go. Each attempt, called a run, starts with one of the characters: the Ironclad, Silent, Defect or Watcher. Every one has its own starting cards and its own way of fighting, so the character you pick shapes the whole run.

How Each Slay the Spire Character Plays
Each character starts with its own cards and a starting relic, a special item that stays with you for the whole run. That's why the same map can feel so different depending on who you pick. The Ironclad leans on raw strength and tough defense. The Silent works through poison, which keeps hurting an enemy each turn, and a flood of small attacks. The Defect fills its slots with orbs that keep working every turn, and the Watcher switches between stances, which are modes that change how every attack lands.
The style you pick shapes everything that follows. It decides which cards you look for in rewards, which ones you skip, and how risky each turn feels. Trying a second character can feel like learning a new game, so it's worth giving each one a few runs.
How to Unlock the Silent, Defect and Watcher
The Ironclad is available from the start, but the other three stay locked until you meet a condition. To unlock the Silent, finish one run as the Ironclad. To unlock the Defect, finish one run as the Silent. A win isn't needed for either one, so the run only has to end.
The Watcher is the last to unlock, and its requirement is tougher. You need the first three characters unlocked, and then you have to beat an Act 3 boss in a normal run with any character. Act 3 is the third stage of the game, and its boss is the big enemy waiting at the end of it. The Watcher was also the last of the four to arrive, added in a January 2020 update.
Each unlock asks you to spend time with the character before it. That way you learn the early characters first, which makes the later ones easier to pick up.
Which Slay the Spire Character Should You Start With?
Start with the Ironclad if this is your first time. It's the most forgiving of the four and the easiest to learn. Its starting relic heals it after every fight, so one early mistake rarely sinks a run. Its strength-based deck is also the most straightforward, since you keep adding power to your attacks and the deck grows from there.
That makes it a good place to learn how fights, rewards and bosses work before you try something more complicated. Once you're comfortable, it's worth trying the others, since the Ironclad usually lands in the middle of the rankings.
Which Slay the Spire Characters Are the Strongest?
The Silent and the Watcher are the two most often named as the strongest, especially at the hardest difficulty, Ascension 20. Ascension is a set of harder levels, and 20 is the top one. The Silent adapts to whatever the game throws at it and can handle every Act boss with the right build. The Watcher is the quickest to clear fights, with bursts of damage that can end a battle fast.
The Ironclad sits in the middle, and the Defect usually comes last. Its early game is slow, and its openings can deal little damage, though strong Defect builds can hit very hard once the pieces come together.
Strength depends on skill as much as on the character. The Silent and Watcher reward careful play and punish sloppy turns, while the Ironclad forgives more. If you want the strongest route up the hardest levels, pick the Silent or Watcher. If you like puzzles, the Defect suits you better.
FAQ
Which Slay the Spire character is the hardest to play?
The Watcher has the least room for error. One miscounted turn can cost you the whole run, and enemies like Nemesis and Time Eater punish big, all-in turns hard.
Do seeded runs count toward unlocking the Watcher?
No. A seeded run uses a set seed, which locks in the map and rewards so every try plays out the same way. The Watcher only unlocks from a normal run, so a win on a seed won't count.
How do the Watcher's stances work?
The Watcher switches between three stances. Wrath doubles the damage it deals and takes, Calm gives you two extra energy when you leave it, and Divinity triples attack damage. Reaching 10 Mantra enters Divinity, which gives three extra energy right away, but you leave it automatically at the start of your next turn.
