You don't need to buy anything to start Chop a Forest. Your hands can take down the first trees, and the logs they drop are where your money comes from. The first sale funds your first real tool, the Axe, so that's the loop to learn before anything else.
How the Chop a Forest Loop Works
The goal of a run is to cut down every tree in the forest. Logs turn into Coins, and Coins buy tools and upgrades that help with chopping, hauling, or later runs. That's the whole cycle, and you'll repeat it until the forest is clear.
How to Start Your First Chop a Forest Run
Your hands are the only tool you start with, so the first run is about learning the controls and the path from tree to Coins.
Desktop Controls
These are the default keys on desktop:
| Action | Desktop key |
|---|---|
| Move | W, A, S, D |
| Jump | Spacebar |
| Interact | E |
| Equip a tool | Number keys 1 through 0 |
| Use a tool | Left mouse button |
If you play on mobile or a controller, the buttons may differ, so check what the game shows you.
Your First Sale
- Enter a forest run and walk up to a tree.
- Punch it with the left mouse button and keep going until it falls.
- Pick up the logs the tree leaves behind.
- Carry the logs to the marked Sell area.
- Sell them to collect Coins.
Punching is the slowest way to chop, and the Axe is the first tool that's a real step up.
What to Buy First in Chop a Forest
Save for the Axe. It chops much faster than your hands and has upgrades of its own. The Axe runs about 150 Coins, but check the price on the Tool Shop card before you save, since prices can change.
Each tool typically has up to three upgrade tracks, and each track goes up to six levels. Every upgrade costs more than the one before it, so budget your Coins so you don't run dry.
Hands Hold is the upgrade to know about on the punch side. If your menu shows it, it lets you keep punching while you hold the mouse button. That's a convenience, not a requirement.
The bigger rule is to skip heavy punch upgrades. Every Coin you put into punching is one that isn't going toward the Axe.
Which Upgrades Help After the Axe?
Once you have the Axe, figure out what's slowing you down. If chopping is slow, put Coins into the Axe's upgrades, since they improve how fast it cuts. If hauling is slow, look at the Vacuum or a vehicle.
The Vacuum helps you collect logs, so it's a pickup tool more than a chopping tool. You'll still spend most of your time with the Axe rather than the Vacuum. Later tools can use Coins or Robux, and prices can change, so read the currency and price on the item card before you save for the Vacuum or anything else after the Axe.
Vehicles at the Garage
The Garage sells vehicles that collect a huge pile of logs at once. You can unlock them with Gems or Coins. Each one has a Speed stat and a Carry stat, and the two trade off against each other, so pick based on whether speed or carrying room is holding you back.
Coin vehicles only last for one run. Gem and Robux vehicles stay with you. Check the vehicle card before you buy to confirm how long it lasts.
What Gems Buy in Chop a Forest
Gems are the main currency of the experience. You earn them at the end of a run and by chopping certain trees, and you spend them on permanent perks, Classes and some vehicles.
Permanent Perks
Perks make every run after you buy them more efficient. There are four tracks: log sale value, Mutation luck, Gem value and bundle size. Each one goes up four to six levels, and the top levels hit hardest. If you already have a strong Class, perks are worth a look for your Gems. Check the perk menu for the level caps.
Classes and Class Shop Stock
Classes are playable archetypes that set your play style for a run. You can buy them with Gems or Robux at the Class Shop in the hub or out in the field. The Class Shop's stock is random, so if the Class you want isn't there, check back later. The Chop a Forest classes tier list ranks the options if you want a head start.
Clearing the Forest and Collecting Your Reward
Clearing the trees moves your run forward. When the forest is fully cut, follow the game's cashout prompt or marker to collect your reward. Don't plan a purchase around a specific Gem amount.
Solo and friend runs save, so you can stop partway through a forest and come back to it.
