Which Valheim Weapon Type Fits How You Fight
Each type has its own combo, its own skill and its own habits. Learn the habit and the choice gets easy.
| Type | How it fights | Reach for it when |
|---|---|---|
| Swords | A three-hit combo that ends on a heavy swing. Damage doesn't drop when one swing hits several enemies. | You want one dependable weapon for every fight. |
| Axes | Solid damage with an overhead secondary swing, and the only weapons that fell trees. | You want your fighting weapon to double as your woodcutter. |
| Clubs | Maces stagger with their secondary attack. Sledges slam the ground and hit everything around the impact. | You're facing crowds, or something weak to blunt damage like Bonemass. |
| Spears | A straight thrust, plus a throw with the secondary attack. | You want to poke from a safe distance and throw when something runs. |
| Polearms | Long reach, and the secondary sweep staggers whole groups. | You're getting swarmed. |
| Knives | Fast, and much stronger against enemies that haven't noticed you. | You're sneaking up on a camp. |
| Fists | A two-hit combo plus a kick, wrapped around claws or knuckles. | You want to fight close and quick. |
| Bows | Hold the draw to raise accuracy, damage and arrow speed. | You're hunting or softening up a target before it reaches you. |
| Crossbows | Slow, powerful shots. Each bolt hits hard. | You'd rather take one big shot than several small ones. |
| Magic staffs | Spells instead of swings. They spend Eitr, and most blood magic staffs take some health too. | You've built up Eitr food and want summons, area damage or a barrier. |
| Shields | Off-hand gear. Round shields and bucklers can parry, tower shields can't. | You're pairing one-handed weapons with a defense. |
Skills don't carry over between types. If you switch from swords to polearms in the Plains, expect a weaker weapon until the new skill catches up, and make the swap right after a boss rather than in the middle of a biome push.
What the Damage and Block Numbers Mean
Base damage is the combined combat damage at the first quality level, and max quality damage is where the weapon tops out after upgrades. Chop damage on axes only counts against trees, so it isn't part of either number. Most blood magic staffs summon allies or cast protection instead of landing a flat hit, which is why they have no damage figure.
The damage types matter as much as the total. Most creatures are weak to one type and resist another, so a weapon that deals one type is easy to plan around. A mix such as the Porcupine's blunt and pierce makes that harder, because things that fear blunt tend to shrug off pierce. Frost slows what it hits, and poison keeps hurting after the swing lands.
Block power is how much damage a block absorbs. Shields are far ahead of weapons here, so weapon block power is a backup. Bucklers trade plain block for the biggest parry bonus, round shields sit in the middle, and tower shields block the most but slow you down and can't parry at all. If you time parries well, take a buckler. If you'd rather stand your ground, take a tower shield.
Where Each Weapon Is Made and How Late Gear Comes Together
The Club and the Stone Axe need no station. You craft them straight from the crafting menu. After that the Workbench and the Forge cover everything up to the Plains, and the Black Forge and Galdr Table take over in the Mistlands. Staffs always come from the Galdr Table.
The Ashlands add a second layer. Many Ashlands weapons have three upgraded versions, each built from the base weapon, some Flametal and one gem:
- Bloodstone: the weapon hits harder the lower your health gets.
- Iolite: adds lightning damage and a chance to trigger chain lightning.
- Jade: adds poison damage, and its hits can immobilize enemies.
Pick the gem for how you fight. Fast weapons such as the Berserkir Axes trigger Iolite's chain lightning often, while Bloodstone rewards players who stay in the fight at low health.
The Deep North changes how weapons are made. A Nord weapon can't be crafted directly. You build a cast at the Black Forge (or the Galdr Table for staffs) from a mould and the listed materials, then harden the cast in the Frost Foundry with Liquid Frost. A finished Nord weapon can then be turned into a Frostfire or Thunderblood version at the Black Forge. Frostfire trades some physical damage for fire and frost. Thunderblood adds lightning, a chance of chain lightning and extra damage while your health is low.
Mistakes That Burn Materials
- Upgrading a Nord or Ashlands base weapon to the top before converting it. The base weapon is consumed when you craft a gem, Frostfire or Thunderblood version, so put your upgrade materials into the finished variant instead.
- Choosing a weapon by its damage number alone. Skill, damage type and attack speed all change how a fight goes. A lower-damage weapon you've trained often wins.
- Taking a tower shield into a fight you plan to parry. Tower shields never parry. Swap to a round shield or buckler.
- Treating every blood magic staff like a damage staff. Most of them summon, shield or reflect. Bring a second weapon for the actual killing.
- Carrying a staff without Eitr food. The spells draw from your Eitr pool, so an empty pool means a dead staff.
Most blood magic staffs summon, shield or reflect instead of dealing a flat hit, so some staffs show no damage.
Shields have no attack stat. Block power is the number to compare.
FAQ
What is the best weapon in Valheim?
There's no single answer, because skill and damage type decide fights as much as raw damage. The highest damage belongs to the Frostfire and Thunderblood versions of Nord weapons in the Deep North, with sledges and crossbows at the top. In the earlier biomes, the best weapon is the strongest one of the type you've already trained.
Which weapons can you dual-wield in Valheim?
The Early Axes, and the Berserkir Axes along with their three gem upgrades. Dual-wielding takes both hands, so you can't carry a shield with them.
Do magic staffs need Eitr in Valheim?
Yes. Every staff spends Eitr per cast, and most blood magic staffs also take some of your health. Eat Eitr food before you head out and keep a second weapon on your hotbar for when the pool runs dry.
Does a shield train its own skill?
Yes. Blocking and parrying train the Blocking skill, which is separate from your weapon skills. A higher Blocking skill makes every shield stronger.
