Types of Aircraft in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
Many of the aircraft are the kind of planes you would see at a small local airfield. Single-engine and twin-engine planes handle flight training, personal flying and business trips, while turboprops carry passengers and cargo on regional routes. Airliners sit at the large end of the range, flying passengers and freight on airline routes.
Other types feel quite different once you fly them. Gliders are built for soaring, hot-air balloons take you sightseeing, and airships are used for sightseeing and observation. Helicopters cover everything from passenger and utility work to rescue and heavy lifting.
The rest are specialist aircraft. Aerobatic planes are made for stunt flying, bush planes handle short and rough strips, and agricultural planes spray crops while water-scooping planes fight wildfires. Military jets and transports, flying boats and amphibious aircraft that can use land or water, and electric aircraft that take off and land vertically round out the mix.
Aircraft Editions: Standard, Deluxe, Premium Deluxe and Aviator
Each edition builds on the one before it. An aircraft first appears in one edition and carries over into every edition above it. That means the Standard aircraft come with every higher edition, and the Aviator edition has the full set.
Deluxe adds light planes, twin-engine aircraft such as the Baron G58 and the 408 SkyCourier, an agricultural plane and the Seastar flying boat. Premium Deluxe brings business jets like the Citation Longitude, the 787-10 airliner and the C-17 Globemaster III military transport, along with extra helicopters and a glider.
Aviator brings a wide mix of older and rarer aircraft, from biplanes and early airliners to large flying boats and wartime transports like the Junkers Ju 52. If vintage flying is what you enjoy, the Aviator edition is where you will find it.
How to Fly Aircraft in Free Flight
Free Flight is the simplest way to try out the aircraft. From the World Map, pick one and fly around the world at your own pace, with no mission to finish.
The selection is wide, covering gliders, helicopters, airliners and military jets. That makes it easy to try very different kinds of flying in a single session.
Best Aircraft for Beginners
If you are new, Discovery Flights are a good place to start. You can find them under Activities, and they begin with the aircraft already in the air before taking you to places such as the Pyramids of Giza and Mount Everest. They are a relaxed way to get a feel for flying before you start lessons.
For lessons, choose Flight Training from the main menu. A virtual instructor named Jess teaches with a Cessna 152 and covers taxiing, takeoff, in-flight maneuvers, navigation and landing. That makes the 152 the natural plane to learn in.
Once you have the basics, the Cessna 172 Skyhawk and the DA40 NG are both suited to flight training and personal travel, so they make good next steps. If you would rather learn helicopters, the Cabri G2 is built for helicopter training.
Aircraft in Career Mode and Their Prices
Career Mode is where you grow a flying career, earn credits and take on jobs inspired by real aviation work, such as aerial firefighting, mountain rescue, air ambulance and helicopter cargo. Career Mode is built around the default planes that come with the Standard edition.
Career Mode also lists purchase prices for a selection of aircraft, and they climb steeply with size, from small trainers like the Cessna 152 up to airliners like the Boeing 737 Max 8. If you don't already own a listed aircraft, you need to buy it from the in-sim Marketplace before you can purchase it in Career Mode.
Standout Aircraft Worth Knowing
Some aircraft stand out for the jobs they are built for, and firefighting is a good example. The CL-415 scoops up water and drops it on wildfires, and it comes with the Standard edition. The Boeing 747-400 Global Super Tanker is built for large-scale aerial firefighting.
For heavy lifting, the Boeing CH-47D Chinook is a military helicopter built to move heavy loads. The H-4 Hercules, also called the Spruce Goose, is a huge flying boat made for heavy cargo.
Electric aircraft give you a different style of flying. The Joby S4 and Midnight both focus on electric air taxi work, with Midnight aimed at short hops.
For straightforward airline flying, the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 Max 8 are the passenger jets to start with.

What if I sell an aircraft and can't afford another one?
Your career isn't over. Microsoft can't edit your career save, so you'll need to work with the money you have left. You can still unlock new certifications and areas, take jobs to earn credits, and build a good reputation, which boosts your income. If you'd rather start over, you can reset your career from the main menu by selecting your gamertag.

How does passive income work with my aircraft?
Passive income builds up while you fly career missions in aircraft that don't have Crew turned on. If you turn Crew on for one plane, you need to fly missions in your other aircraft to keep earning it, or use Employee mode if that's your only freelance aircraft. It doesn't build while you're in the menus, in Free Flight, in World Photographer Mode or with the game turned off.
